HOW TO CHOOSE AN INFLATABLE MATTRESS - how to choose the right inflatable mattress-bed, which inflatable mattress to choose

Need an inflatable mattress bed? There are 3 important characteristics to consider when deciding which air mattress to choose.

How to choose the right inflatable mattress

1. Material and stiffeners

When choosing an inflatable bed, pay attention to its stiffening ribs. If they are longitudinal, you should know that under heavy loads such a bed is short-lived. Cross ribbed mattresses (look like cells) are more durable. Their strength is due to the laser stitching of the vertical inserts. Such mattresses provide an even load on the spine over the entire surface.

Manufacturers often make inflatable beds from synthetic materials:

  • based on plastic. The smooth surface is easy to clean, suitable for the beach or picnic. But the bed linen slips off it, so you won't be able to sleep comfortably.
  • based on waterproof vinyl. An elastic flock resembling velor is applied to one of the surfaces. It prevents the bedding from slipping and wrinkling.

Due to the fact that the surface of the bed is easy to clean and does not allow water to pass through, it can be taken on a hike in nature without worrying that the covering will get damp.

Consider the peculiarity of vinyl: at sub-zero temperatures, it becomes tough and brittle. Do not unroll the inflatable bed directly from the street for 2 hours. The mattress should warm up to room temperature. To avoid cold in winter and hot in summer to sleep on an inflatable mattress, put a blanket, blanket, mattress topper or blanket under the sheet.

2. Sizes of air mattresses

The most important criterion for an inflatable bed is its size. There are 5 categories of berths:

  • 76x191 cm - a single mattress, characterized by its low weight and size. A good option for resting a child or as a trestle bed when traveling;
  • 99x191 cm - one and a half mattress for one person;
  • 137x192 cm - not a wide double bed;
  • 152x203 cm - a full double bed, designed for a comfortable stay for two people;
  • 183x203 cm - king size double bed for two people with a large build.

Bed height:

  • 13 cm - an economical option for a temporary bed;
  • 22 cm is the most popular height. Will not be firm, but inflate - much faster;
  • 56 cm - an inflatable bed with this height completely replaces the usual one.

3. Valve tightness and pump type

Be sure to check the valve for leaks as it is often the weak link in air mattresses. Some models are equipped with a double protection valve. Pump up the bed as much as possible and close the cap. Moisten the valve with soapy water and lie on the mattress. If the valve is blowing bubbles, chances are good that you will be on the floor by morning as the mattress will deflate.

Estimate the size of the valve bore. The wider it is, the less time you will inflate / deflate the mattress.

You don't have to exercise your lungs to inflate a mattress. Expensive models have a reinforced frame structure and a built-in pump. Inflatable furniture pumps are of two types:

  • mechanical (hand or foot) - work from the muscular strength of a person. It takes a lot of sweat to inflate a large mattress;
  • electric - automatically inflates the mattress, without the need for physical effort for 1 minute on average.

To check if the mattress is inflated enough, sit on it. The surface should remain level without bending under you.
