How to connect a laptop to a TV - cables for connecting a laptop to a TV HDMI, VGA, S-Video and DVI - adapters and cords

We connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI cable

  1. Connect the cable to the HDMI output of your laptop.
  2. Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI input of your TV.
  3. On the remote control of your TV, press the button that selects the displayed signal source.

It is now popular to buy a laptop instead of a desktop computer and use a TV instead of a monitor. A display is enough to work on the Internet and office applications, and a TV is used to play games and watch movies. Naturally, the question becomes how to connect a laptop to a TV.

How to connect a laptop to a TV: proven methods

There are the following connection methods:

  • VGA interface, which is available on all old TV models;
  • DVI interface;
  • S-Video interface;
  • via HDMI, which new models are equipped with.

VGA interface

The easiest option is when the TV also has a VGA connector. In the settings of the graphics adapter, you need to specify the option for output to an external display. In the TV settings, VGA is set as the video signal source. Sound transmission goes through a mini-jack adapter with two tulips. If you have a CRT TV, then its maximum resolution is 640x480. The sweep frequency is usually within 50 hertz. You can only use them for watching videos or playing games. When working with documents, eyes will get tired from such a screen. Therefore, it is better to buy a modern TV.

S-Video

You will most likely need to purchase an S-video cable separately. Do not use a cable longer than 180cm, otherwise the signal will be attenuated, which will lead to a decrease in the image quality. Contacts must be gold plated. If your TV does not have an S-Video input, then you need an S-Video to RCA composite adapter. However, the composite input does not provide such a high-quality image as the S-Video input.

The audio signal is transmitted in the same way as in the case of the VGA-interface - through a "mini-jack" with "tulips".

HDMI interface

The most convenient option is when both the laptop and the TV have HDMI ports. The main advantage of HDMI is the ability to transmit video and audio signals over a single cable. Therefore, you will not have to mess with minijacks and adapters. The length of the cable does not matter in this case. HDMI data cables do not have the disadvantages of analog signals.

DVI interface

TVs with a DVI connector but no HDMI are rare but nonetheless. If your laptop video card has a DVI connector, you need to buy a special adapter. Then you need to solve the problem with sound, since DVI does not transmit sound, and the HDMI connector of the TV "waits" for the audio signal. We use the same "minijack" for sound transmission.
