EMPIRE EARTH 3

Here, friends, we have waited for a new game from the Empire Earth series. The third part was developed by Mad Doc Software studio. These guys also did the second part of the epic. But in order to appreciate Empire Earth 3, you need to return a little to the past.

The first installment of the hugely popular Empire Earth is Stainless Steel's attempt to bring Civilization's gameplay mechanics to the RTS genre. This would allow the player to rule their state, from the prehistoric era to the distant future. We partially succeeded. Each era was represented by the corresponding troops, which affected not only the appearance of the fighters, but also their combat characteristics. True, the units of all nations were almost the same - the difference between the opposing sides was only in the set of starting bonuses. But before the start of the world invasion, we had to suffer a lot with unclear management: chasing the peasants and making them cut down timber, build houses, dig up gold and iron ore. These comrades were always trying to escape somewhere or throw themselves into the clutches of a forest beast running by ... And now, after all these sacred rites, the player had almost no desire to play.

The second part of Empire Earth was already done by Mad Doc studio. They decided that there was little management in the first part, and added a bunch of different bells and whistles. But, in the end, a miracle happened, and the developers realized that the game turned out to be very tricky and for an amateur. Therefore, the third series took the path of simplification and attracting a wider range of consumers, so to speak.

So, let's start with the plot of empire earth, or more precisely, with its absence. You are a great, terrible and, apparently, an immortal ruler. And your task is to subjugate all the provinces of the planet with an iron hand and establish your dominion over this sinful world. And this will help just the very simplification of the game, and especially the game management. You will have only three resources, on the quantity of which the empire will be built. Resources are simple to the point of banality: like a stone (needed for the construction of buildings and upgrading units); type of gold (needed for the same purposes as the previous resource); research points (needed to go to the next era). By the way, the times in your civilization have been reduced to five, instead of 15: ancient times, the Middle Ages, the colonial era, the present time and the future.

The player will be able to choose between three civilizations: West, East, and Far East. And the East, as you know, is a delicate matter. Well, there is nothing new in this, and the developers did not inspire America. But, as in the classic strategy game, each race has its own unique buildings and unique units, respectively. And all this with a pretty good balance, which is good news. As for your combat units, then the civilization of the West will differ in expensive to manufacture, but also the most powerful units, the East focuses on mobility and strength, and the Far East will take in numbers. And the game balance of empire earth does not suffer from this seemingly imbalance. Each tribe has unique combat units in each era. If in the earlier parts of Empire Earth it all came down to creating powerful fighting robots, now everything has changed somewhat. Now only the West has such walking "pieces of iron", but the Far East has followed the path of genetic improvement of living material.

Apart from local showdowns in real-time strategy mode, then all other actions, in particular management management, will take place on the global map of the world. It is a three-dimensional model of our blue planet, which is also embossed. It is in this global marching mode that you have to build impregnable strongholds, establish friendly relations with neighbors and conduct research.

To compensate for the minimization and simplification of the gameplay itself, the developers have introduced a local and global system of "quests". You want to capture a neighboring province in RTS mode. What to do? You can, of course, take more non-Russian warriors with you and go against the enemy, so that the "adversary" does not trample the non-Russian land with his knives. But there is an easier option. When your scouts approach the enemy center, the "quest" window falls out like snow on your head. Moreover, with what scenario! Well, just a fairy tale. Save, says the king, my daughter, the princess from captivity, and you will, good fellow, my child and half of my kingdom to boot. It's funny after all. Only here you will not get half of the province, but the whole. And for this you need to do nothing at all. Surround this very princess with six (as many as possible) soldiers and bring her to the city center. These are the simple tasks that the developers gave us. In general, such a concept as a separate campaign has gone into oblivion. And you don't need it if you have a global map. The latter, by the way, is divided into 60 areas that need to be safely padded for themselves.

Now let's go directly to the gameplay in strategy mode. What can you say? You will not see anything new and impressive here. Strategy a la Warcraft or something like that. Rivet a large army and demolish everything in your path. If, for example, you, while still in the most ancient era, set up more shock cavalry and rush to the detachments of spearmen, which are supposedly strong against cavalry, then ... from these very spearmen there will be no wet place. Yes, the balance is clearly suffering here. But such a twist is observed only at the lowest level of difficulty. This is understandable. Everything looks much better on the other two levels. And the outcome of the battle depends not only on the amount of cannon fodder, but on the tactical and strategic approach to the battle. When your or enemy soldiers are beaten, they pour, yes, a huge amount of blood is shed. When hit by a spear or other deadly weapon, the fighters simply disappear from view in a spray of blood. It's scary ...

Well, okay, these are all little things. Maybe a game designer is missing something in life. And so that the thoughts of what it is, do not bother you, let's move on to the game camera. What can I say about her ... The most ordinary camera that does not cause absolutely any emotions. It is simple and convenient, but there is no way to deploy it. You can only zoom in or out.

The developers of empire earth "went through" the whole game and removed all unnecessary things, in their understanding, of course. All diplomacy, if you can call it that now, boils down to concluding an alliance, declaring war, and you can still help the allies a little with resources. But the amount of transferred resources is limited to a certain figure, which cannot be changed. The city councilor, who even helped a lot in the second part, has irrevocably disappeared, and now the player will be in charge of the whole household. The resources in the game are not limited - row until you get bored. But, just like in the previous parts, there is a limit on the number of units. With the graphic part, the situation is very prosaic. The visual shell, so to speak, will delight the eyes of only fans of old games and "antediluvian" graphics. And this is with high computer requirements. For example, my old "vacuum cleaner" (Athlon 3200+, 1G6 RAM, Radeon X1600Pro) showed eight frames per second in RTS mode. And this is with minimal settings. In general, the graphics engine is somehow wrong here.

"Cossacks" and that look better. But this is a subjective opinion. And in general, where will you see a modern strategy in which aerial bombs do not leave craters?

But the voice acting of all this happiness did not disappoint. Nice music accompanies you throughout the game. The battle is also well voiced. But somehow I did not hear the noise of the rain. Maybe this is by design?

Well, let's summarize. The game, in principle, is done quite well, as far as the gameplay itself is concerned. Everything else suffers a little. But does this really matter for fans of the series? Of course not. So, buy and enjoy the new brainchild of Mad Doc Software. And if you prefer something like World in Conflict, then you can safely forget about the existence of the good old Empire Earth 3.
