Sony Ericsson C905 positioning

The Sony Ericsson C905 phone is the flagship model of the Cyber-shot camera phone line, which would seem to automatically mean leadership in many other aspects, but the manufacturer has changed its priorities and made this solution more unique. Starting from the idea of all-in-one, the manufacturer remembered several generations of owners of their mobile devices, then a quick change of course, when each device loses its versatility and begins to stand out with one thing.

Cyber-shot devices were supposed to become one of the success factors, probably everyone recalls the rapid sales of the Sony Ericsson T610 mobile phone, which was one of the first mobile devices in which there was a built-in camera, then the Sony Ericsson K750 model entered the mobile market, thanks to which the concept of cameras has been turned upside down. And behind it is the Sony Ericsson K800i, which was quite interesting, but did not present anything stunning, the positions of the company's camera phones became blurred. The next blow to Sony Ericsson was the Nokia N95 smartphone, which was one of the first to have a built-in five megapixel camera, which outperformed Sony Ericsson devices by almost half a year. For the release of the Sony Ericsson K850i, this device was not so interesting, although it had a xenon flash, and a number of other interesting details, as well as an updated camera interface. Compared to the success of its predecessors, the sales of this mobile device were very moderate, even taking into account the now increased level of this manufacturer and its share. Therefore, to prepare their answer to competitors, namely the next device in the Cyber-shot line, they approached very seriously. It was supposed to be an outstanding mobile device in every sense, with an excellent camera module, plus excellent functionality, in order to provide a noticeable increase in sales in this price segment. The manufacturer considered that one of the conditions for success was the absence of direct competitors at the time the Sony Ericsson C905 mobile phone entered the market. Focusing on the Finnish manufacturer, Sony Ericsson simply forgot about the existence of Samsung, which, while negotiating camera modules for devices from Sony Ericsson, launched in parallel the creation of its own line of camera phones. As a result, an amazing situation developed: the prototypes of the Sony Ericsson C905 model were originally with one camera module, and then it was replaced and brought to mind. As a result, a lot of time was spent, which was necessary for the release of this device to the mobile market.

Exterior view of Sony Ericsson C905

The appearance of this mobile phone gives a double impression. On the one hand, there is something high-tech and sophisticated. This image is performed not by the small dimensions of this mobile phone, large square keys (completely rectangular square appearance) and various additional buttons. But in a place with all this, the feeling that noise has been raised from nothing does not leave. Firstly, I was a little disappointed with the material from which the body of this mobile phone is made. Naturally, we did not expect to see a metal giant here (which is a pity - then the device would really turn out cool), but plastic is subjectively inexpensive for such a cool mobile device, as the Sony Ericsson C905 is positioned.Although from the point of view of practicality, this option is excellent. The plastic from which the case is made is matte and hard, so it will be very difficult to see the various prints on the case. The abrasions of the case will also not be particularly disturbing.

At the ends of the device there are dark inserts, which are also made of plastic. The solution is quite successful, since thanks to this device it is possible to add style and somewhat blur the impression of thick ends. We have no complaints about the build quality of this device. We did not find crunches and creaks of details. A very pleasant surprise was the lack of front panel backlash - which is quite common in many modern sliders. There are no complaints about the slider mechanism of the Sony Ericsson C905 either, the slider is not tight, it can be either closed or opened with one finger. There is some backlash when the slider is open, but it is present in almost 99% of sliders. I would like to say the same about the shutter that covers the camera's eye: it drives a little, almost the same as the panel under it, but structurally this is quite understandable, because the shutter will often be opened as it is a camera phone, and the panel under it, when the shutter is moved a little goes into the body so that the curtain can take its place. So the mobility of some parts is quite understandable, and is not considered a disadvantage.

The mobile phone fits comfortably in the hand and does not slip; despite its considerable dimensions, it does not cut into the palm - this is due to the hemispherical design of the end parts of the mobile device. True, I do not advise you to wear it in jeans pockets, as it will hardly fit there. And even if it fits, it will not look aesthetically pleasing there. The phone will be convenient to carry in the pocket of a bag, outerwear and so on.

The battery cover can be removed by simply sliding it down. True, you may not be able to do this the first time - since the lower end part and the lid are combined, which makes removing the lid less convenient. But you need to get used to it, it took me about two days to do it. The cover of the battery pack is fastened in place in the opposite direction, but it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the projections fit exactly into the grooves - since the projections are very thin, if handled carelessly, there is a high probability that they will break. The SIM card slot is located under the battery compartment and has a traditional look. Replacing a SIM card is very easy.

Keyboard in Sony Ericsson C905

The block of digital buttons is a thin plastic plate with markings on it. The designations on the keys are better read than, for example, in phones from a Finnish manufacturer of the same segment.

The block of navigation buttons is located on the front panel. It is typical for phones of this manufacturer: soft buttons, call buttons, correction and menu launch buttons, as well as a four-way navigation button with an inscribed button to confirm the selected action. All of them are made in a square design.

The buttons are quite convenient when working, although the control keys take some time to get used to (so that the finger falls on the desired key the first time). In order to facilitate this, the vertical rows of keys have an arcuate shape, in each of which the keys that are located in the center protrude at the level of the body more than the others, which have a bevel on the surface.

One of the drawbacks of these buttons is a double click when pressing any key, especially the navigation key. On the contrary, the devices from the Finnish manufacturer benefit from this. Although if it doesn't matter to you, then there is no point in paying attention to it.

There are quite a few additional keys on the case, and almost all of them are located on the left end part. The placement is not surprising - since these buttons are primarily intended to control the camera.Consider the buttons from top to bottom: first - the rocker button, which serves to adjust the volume of the sound and also performs the function of zooming when working with the camera. Next - a small oval-shaped key, which serves to switch to the mode of viewing pictures and video files. Near it is a button for switching modes between photo and video. By pressing this button, you can also turn on the camera; if you have a shutter closed when you press this button, the phone will ask you to open it, but the camera itself will turn on. But in the case of smartphones Nokia N82 and N79 with a closed shutter, launching the camera will simply be impossible. In addition, to turn on the camera, you can also use the button that serves to release the shutter of the camera, which is below all the others.

On the right side there are two keys that are responsible for launching functions for working with photos and videos, they are located on both sides of the earpiece. They are not very noticeable as they are made of transparent plastic. The keys are the same in terms of capabilities. They differ only in the nature of the presentation: when you press the left button, the last picture taken will appear on the display, and when you press the right button, the whole album. Another thing is in the shooting mode: here the left button adjusts the shooting mode, and the right button selects the shooting conditions.

Additional keys are very convenient to use. The call reset button, which is located on the front panel on the right side of the mobile device, is responsible for turning on the mobile device.

The keys are backlit in white-greenish color, the backlight is not very bright and turns on when you open the slider halves. The navigation key block has a brighter backlight. But if the keyboard is locked, the backlighting of the keys will not work. The buttons are locked by closing the slider, and if you want to unlock the keyboard, you will need to press the left and then the right soft button.

Battery Sony Ericsson C905

The set with the mobile phone includes a standard lithium-polymer battery BST-38 with a capacity of 930 mAh. It is not difficult to remove the battery from the battery compartment, for this you need to pick up the battery in the place where for this there is a special groove for your finger. It takes about two hours to fully charge the battery.

Screen Sony Ericsson C905

The screen is an undoubted advantage of this mobile device. Quite good resolution, large physical size, good color rendering - all this only adds to the advantages of our phone. True, if you look closely, you can see the graininess on the screen, but this cannot be called a serious drawback. The viewing angles are also not ideal; even with minimal deviation, the screen loses its brightness. True, the color rendering remains correct.

For the design of the phone, it has standard background images, screensavers - everything is standard here. Also, the phone has four preinstalled themes. In the display settings there is a five-level brightness control, you can immediately change the size of the clock on the display.

While viewing pictures, it is possible to switch between horizontal and vertical screen orientation, or you can enable the automatic change of the display position when the mobile device is turned in a certain direction, since the phone has a motion sensor.

Sony Ericsson C905 camera

A separate review will be devoted to the camera, which I will write a little later, and now I will try to briefly describe the Sony Ericsson C905 camera. There have been no revolutionary changes compared to the five megapixel cameras. The eight megapixel camera Sony Ericsson C905 did not replace the digital camera. Although the quality is at the level of devices in this segment.

Sony Ericsson C905 software component

The software part of the Sony Ericsson C905 phone is based on the A200 platform, which is the most up-to-date version of the software platform among conventional phones from Sony Ericsson.

The menu icons have not changed in any way, they are traditional. The main menu is represented by twelve icons. Which can be displayed in the form of a 3x4 matrix, or one icon on the display with a common panel on the right side, or a horizontal ring. Submenus are presented as vertical lists. All arrows of the navigation button can be programmed to launch certain applications, this can be done through the menu Options - General. Also, to make it easier to work with applications, the phone has a standard My Links menu, from which you can easily navigate to open programs, as well as open or switch between them.

Next are the various Internet browser options, such as6 browsing history, list of Internet applications, entertainment, subscriptions to news from the Internet, information about the accessories your mobile phone can use, going to the Sony Ericsson homepage and being able to contact customer support. of this company. In the browser settings, you can disable the display of images on web pages, download sounds from web pages, and accept cookies. There is also a function to delete all saved passwords. The phone has 150 megabytes of built-in memory, which is dynamically allocated, in addition, the package includes a 2 gigabyte M2 memory card. You can view the status of your current memory in the File manager application, which is located in the Organizer menu. The implementation of the manager is no different from other models from Sony Ericsson. The memory status can be checked by accessing the Options menu.

Communication capabilities Sony Ericsson C905

When the phone is connected to a personal computer, the phone will prompt the user to choose one of four connection modes: Phone (in this mode, you can synchronize data and use a mobile phone as a modem to access the Internet), Data transmission (this mode is used to transfer data to a mobile phone), Print (the mode is used for printing photos from the phone), and Storage device (known as mass storage mode). With the latter mode, you will not be able to use the phone functions. To enable this mode, you will have to spend about ten seconds, the same amount will be required for the return return. When the phone is connected to a personal computer, the system detects it as a removable medium, and at the same time a kind of memory, both the phone itself and the memory card. File transfer operations will not take long. When transferring one album of MP3 files, 240 megabytes in size, at an average speed of 2.74 megabits, it was possible to transfer to the phone in 45 seconds.

The cable connector is located on the right side of the mobile device. It's Fast-port as always. The connector is not covered with a cap. The plug fits into the connector conveniently and holds firmly.

As for the Bluetooth module, to enable it, you need to go to Settings - Communication. The Bluetooth manager interface is standard.Almost all current communication profiles are supported.

A few words about the built-in Wi-Fi module. As soon as the module is turned on, the phone tries to find networks automatically; you can find out about the network search results in about 10 seconds. From the settings, I would like to note the ability to search for networks by name. In addition, manual configuration of networks is supported, and there is also a power saving mode (it is highly discouraged to turn it on if access points fail).

The phone has a TV-out.

Phonebook Sony Ericsson C905

The phone book has practically not changed in any way, it can still store up to 1000 saved contacts in the phone memory and up to 200 contacts in the SIM-card memory, each contact can be assigned a certain picture or ringtone. The same can be said for groups. But there are no standard groups in the phone, you will need to create them yourself. Any audio files that are protected in your phone can be used as a ringtone. In the Options menu, you can find out the amount of free space for storing contact records, you can also transfer your contacts via IrDA or Bluetooth, copy records from the phone memory to the SIM card memory and vice versa. The ability to quickly dial numbers is supported, there can be no more than nine of them.

Call log in Sony Ericsson C905

There are four tabs in the call log: general, received, outgoing and missed calls. When viewing the log, special symbols indicate contacts where they are stored in the phone memory or in the SIM card memory, indicating the date and time of the phone call. During a telephone conversation, the time counter is displayed in the lower right corner of the display.

Messages in Sony Ericsson C905

You can create SMS, MMS, voice and e-mail messages in your phone. You can add pictures, sounds, animations and melodies to text messages, and convert them to multimedia messages. Creation of your own message templates is supported. The phone has pre-installed T9 dictionaries, thanks to which you can type the texts you need twice as fast. Almost any audio file, from dictaphone recording to MP3 files, can be used as a message signal. The implementation of multimedia messaging has also remained unchanged. Thanks to the support of the scaling function, you can crop graphic files by gradation. In addition to the delivery report, you can also set up a report on the receipt of your message by another subscriber. The email client supports sending and receiving emails, all emails are saved to the memory card. In addition, the phone supports reading RSS feeds.

Applications in Sony Ericsson C905

Everything related to the organizer and work programs is in one menu. In the alarm clock, you can set up to five signals that have different response times, you can also use any audio file as an alarm melody.

The calendar. The calendar in Sony Ericsson C905 is quite large and pleasant to use. Calendar events can be viewed both by day and by week or month. For each event, the exact time and start date, as well as the duration and topic of the event, are indicated.

Calculator. With the calculator, you can perform up to four arithmetic operations. Directly from the calculator, you can go to the converter, in which you can convert not only currencies, but also measures of length, mass, temperature and area.

Dictaphone. The application is located in the Entertainment menu. It can record recordings up to one hour in length. Recorded videos can be used as a ringtone or alarm.

Music player in Sony Ericsson C905

You can start the player using the My Links menu, or simply through the main menu.

The player has a standard interface. The album cover is displayed in the center, on the right side of which the current state of the player, the volume scale, the total number of songs in the playlist and the number of the current track are indicated.Slightly below is the playhead along with the time counter. Below it is the name of the current track and artist, and at the very bottom there are graphical controls for the music player. The horizontal arrows of the navigation key are used to rewind music tracks. And vertical switches to the playlist and navigation through it. The confirmation key of the selected action performs the function of playing and stopping playback of the music track.

Of the features of this music player, I would like to note the possibility of both random playback of music tracks and repeated ones, you can also enable extended stereo bases in the settings and use a five-band equalizer. The equalizer has five pre-settings, as well as the ability to manually adjust each of them.

In the Music Library, tracks can be sorted by title, artist, genre, album, and playlist. Podcasts and audio books are highlighted as separate items. One of the music files can be sent directly from the player via Bluetooth or e-mail.

FM radio in Sony Ericsson C905

You can start the radio through the My Links menu or through the main menu. The player supports: TrackID, automatic search for radio stations, saving radio stations to the phone's memory, entering the frequency of a radio station from the keyboard, turning on the Mono mode. RDS is also supported, the player plays nicely in the background. However, you won't be able to use the camera and listen to the radio at the same time, because the phone automatically closes the radio when you open the shutter. But playing or writing messages is always welcome. The phone memory can store up to twenty radio stations. Switching between saved radio stations is carried out by vertical arrows of the navigation key, and horizontal arrows are moving along the frequency range. The quality of the radio signal reception is good, so there are no complaints about this point.

Games in Sony Ericsson C905

The phone has three pre-installed JAVA games: Kasparov Chess, Need for Speed, Tennis Multiplay. The first game is chess (there is a tincture of the difficulty level), the second is racing (by the way, we never managed to launch it, although we already tested a commercial version of a mobile device), and the third is a beautiful three-dimensional tennis. In general, games for different tastes. Games are located in the Entertainment menu.

Accessories Sony Ericsson C905

Among the accessories I would like to note an adapter-adapter for M2 memory cards to USB. It is foldable and compact in appearance. It is more convenient to use it for transferring data to a memory card and the speed is higher than by cable. I liked this adapter, it really allows, saves time when transferring large amounts of data.

Competitors Sony Ericsson C905

Since in this review we are considering an eight-megapixel camera phone, then a competitor for comparison should also be a camera phone with the same module resolution. And here they are - LG KC910 Renoir and Samsung SGH-M8800 Pixon. Of the advantages of the Samsung SGH-M8800 Pixon, I would like to note the thin body. The screen will also be larger by as much as one inch, since it uses a 3.2-inch matrix. But on the other hand, it does not have a Wi-Fi module, and we do not expect anything good from the camera module itself.

If we take the LG KC910 Renoir, then the camera here may well compete with the camera of our hero. After all, it has certified optics, and the ISO threshold is 1600 units. A three-inch touchscreen display is an indisputable advantage over the hero of our review. In addition, the LG KC910 Renoir has a Wi-Fi and GPS module. And also LG KC910 Renoir can handle office documents - which Sony Ericsson C905 cannot.

Sony Ericsson C905 review summary

With the long-term use of the phone, every hour we began to like it more and more. You can completely forget about cheap case materials. The large buttons, especially the control buttons, are quite pleasant to work with. The software filling is practically no different from the latest models of this manufacturer. A two gigabyte memory card included is also not bad.I would only like the cost of this device to be lower, as this may affect the number of sales of this device.
