Nokia E50

Nokia E 50

Nokia E50 enjoys popularity unheard of for smartphones - people, regardless of age and occupation, use it. Although the device was originally intended for businessmen.

At one time, Nokia E50 became a very interesting and expected product: many users would not refuse to experience what a smartphone is, but they were scared off by the large size, weight and overall monumentality of such devices. The Nokia 5500 Sport and Nokia E50 models have been released especially for such users. And if, as a payback for the elegance of the forms, the first had to acquire a frankly small screen (analogous to that of the Nokia 6230i, 208 x 208 pixels), then in the case of the E50 the developers decided to slightly increase the proportions and install a larger QVGA display. On the whole, if you look at the numbers, the metric parameters of the E50 coincide with those for the most voluminous phones, but this does not prevent the device from looking elegant and miniature in comparison with its “older sister” - the E60 model and similar “giants”. It should be noted that the possibility of reducing the size of the device was not least achieved by the refusal to support 3G.

Today there are two versions of the E50 available on the market - with and without a camera. At first, both versions were extremely expensive - more than E6O or even E70, and all because a significant share of the price was accounted for by a substantial amount of preinstalled licensed software products: E50 is equipped with a good archiver, a PDF reader from Adobe, an application for creating work groups, a package QuickOffice, which, however, did not have the ability to edit documents, as well as many others. I must say that in our country, an increase in the price of a product due to preinstalled software is extremely dubious. At least for us buyers.

Housing

The body of the device is finished with metal, which, of course, benefits the appearance of the device. The build quality is at a high level: the E50 is firmly knocked down and leaves the feeling of a reliable thing, there is not even a hint of any creak or play. Moreover, over time, the case remains a monolith, despite the falls and hardships of life in a pocket next to small change and keys. I will only note that the terminal doesn’t like changing SIM cards or memory cards very often - the plastic button that opens the rear panel latch loosens from frequent pressing, gives a slight backlash and slightly “sinks”. Be as careful as possible with her.

The keyboard looks ergonomic at first glance, but when typing, your fingers get tired quite quickly (probably due to the tight layout and firmness of the keys). And here is the joystick. It is very tight and is also made of metal - it is frankly inconvenient to use it, moreover, over time you risk getting a callus on your thumb. Keep this in mind. Well "twirl in your hands" the E50 before buying, so as not to regret it later.

Screen

Of the unpleasant and painful, I cannot but note the excessively dull protective glass - in some cases the picture looks blurry. Remember SX1? Here is the same problem, although not in such a neglected state. Perhaps this is just nit-picking of a too demanding user, but I found a similar flaw in all four devices that passed through my hands from different batches, bought in different cities. Actually, an important tip: when buying an E50, it is highly desirable to raise the edge of the protective film and see if the picture quality suits you. Alas, this is not allowed in all stores. But this is extremely important - with excellent theoretical parameters in practice, you can not get any pleasure from the screen quality. I must say that the display glass is quite delicate and prone to any scratches. This problem is solved as follows: you buy a large 3.5-inch film for your PDA and cut it into pieces that are glued to the screen.

Interface

The main problem with the E50 interface is the extremely small and not very nice fonts. Yes, they harmonize well with icons, themes, and the idle desktop. But! Sometimes it is not very pleasant to peer into the text, you want to look - and so that everything is in full view. This problem is solved as follows: a) download fonts for the S60 Third Edition, there should be three of them in the archive; 2) rename them - NOSNR60.TTF, NSSB60. TTF, NSTSB60.TTF; 3) write to the E: resourceFonts folder (on a memory card via a card reader or with a cable connection - since this folder is closed in the phone's memory); 4) reload and enjoy the transformed interface.

Camera

As mentioned above, there are two versions of the E50 - with a 1.3-megapixel camera (E50-1) and without it (E50-2). I cannot judge which of these two options is more interesting, I will only note that the quality of the E50-1's images leaves much to be desired - a very cheap matrix from Samsung is used here, which will suit only the most unassuming users. There is no flash and a mirror for shooting self-portraits, the video is recorded with a maximum resolution of 176 x 144 pixels. Then is it worth overpaying? But if you still prefer the photo version, then I do not advise you to remove the protective film covering the camera peephole - the plastic located around the lens and directly protecting it quickly scratches, thereby deteriorating the already not ideal picture quality. And no difference in the quality of the photo with the pasted film and immediately after its removal was not noticed.

Performance and programs

The performance tests show a score similar to other products from the company with QVGA screens and similar processors (OMAP 1710, 220 MHz) - Nokia N71 and N73. However, menu navigation occurs with slight delays (this is typical of all S60 smartphones); however, E50 is much faster than E60 or N80 - progress is noticeable to the naked eye. Java programs take a long time to start, it's good that during their operation there are no special "brakes". As well as problems with the simultaneous launch of several midlets - the device will be thoughtful for 10 seconds, but JIMM and Opera Mini are quite capable of working in parallel. However, this picture looks very depressing (switching between programs is very slow) - I sincerely advise you not to start more than one Java. Moreover, not so long ago there appeared a quite stable version of QIP for S60 /

Outcomes

Nokia E50 has gained wide popularity in Ukraine. This fact can be explained both by the rapid price drop for this very successful device, and by very good consumer qualities - the model is perfectly assembled, looks quite expensive and at the same time is a full-fledged modern smartphone. Moreover, it has been noticed more than once that buyers choose not between a phone and a phone or between a smartphone and a smartphone, but, for example, between E50 and 6233, or E50 and Sony Ericsson K810i. This is a very indicative fact - the E50 has become exactly what the manufacturing company imagined it - a smartphone with the appearance and speed of an ordinary modern "mobile phone".
