How to choose an aquarium filter

Filters

Like any living organism, aquarium fish, in the process of their vital activity, secrete substances that have the ability to pollute the water. This leads to the fact that the fish are forced to live surrounded by their own garbage. This will gradually lead to stunted growth, dull coloration and poor disease resistance. This problem is aggravated by the fact that aquariums contain a lot of fish in a small amount of water, while in nature the opposite is true. That is why a filtration process must be carried out to purify the water in every aquarium. This process is divided into two components:

- Mechanical filtration - removal of large debris from the water that has not dissolved. This type of filtration is carried out using a sponge mounted on the filter.

- Chemical filtration - removal of dissolved harmful substances from the water by a filter. For chemical filtration, activated carbon or ceramic filler is most commonly used.

Currently, there are a large number of filters, some of which may have only a sponge as a filter element, some may have both a sponge and a filler for chemical filtration. However, some filters can be installed inside the aquarium, and some outside. Also, when choosing a filter, you should definitely pay attention to the volume of water for which it is intended. After all, if you install a filter in a two-hundred-liter aquarium, which is designed for a hundred liters, then it will not be able to cope with the volume of water and your aquarium will quickly become dirty. Let's consider some types of filters.

To begin with, consider a filter with simultaneous chemical and mechanical filtration. An example of such a product is the Aquael TurboFilter 500 (109401).

As we can see from the figure, this filter has a mechanical cleaning sponge, behind which a special container with bioceramic filler is installed. Also, additional containers with other fillers, such as activated carbon, can be installed on such a filter. The advantages of Aquael TurboFilter 500 (109401) are as follows:

- high performance;

- the possibility of saturating the aquarium water with oxygen, so that you do not have to purchase an additional compressor;

- quiet operation of the device and low energy consumption (filter power is only 4.4 watts);

- mechanical filtration of water is carried out at the highest level;

- the ability to install additional containers for multilevel chemical filtration;

- smooth filter performance regulator.

Some filters are equipped with a sprinkler, which oxygenates your aquarium and emits a pleasant bubbling sound. If you want to purchase such a filter, then you should definitely pay attention to Sun-Sun Jialu Hj-311B.

This filter is designed for small aquariums, and therefore its main advantage is its compactness. For filtration, it has a coarse-grained sponge and activated carbon. Also, the Sun-Sun Jialu Hj-311B filter is very quiet during operation, which allows it to be installed in the aquarium, which is located next to the bed. For a sprinkler, such a filter is capable of raising water to a height of 0.6 meters. The filter weighs 150 grams. All you need to install it in your aquarium is to purchase a filter, take it out of the packaging and place it in a suitable place in the aquarium.

Along with the above, there are also filters that are capable of providing only mechanical cleaning. An example of such a filter is Sun-Sun Jialu HBL-301 ll.

The main advantage of the Sun-Sun Jialu HBL-301 ll filter is that it does not need to be completely immersed in the aquarium, but it is enough just to lower the bottom tube into the water. Thanks to this, it became possible to install such a filter in very small aquariums, because it absolutely does not take up useful space for fish.

For aquariums with a large volume (300 liters or more), it is recommended to use external external filters. The Jebo Biofilter 829 is just such a product.

Such a filter consists of the following components:

1. Case;

2. "Head" of the filter, in which the electric pump and rotor are installed;

3. Five trays with special filter media;

4. Water intake pipe;

5. An adapter for a water intake pipe with a special protective grill;

6. Discharge tube with flute;

7. Two hoses;

8. Pallet;

9. Two ball valves for fastening hoses;

10. Strong suction cups;

11. User manual.

The volume of the filter housing (canister) is 16 liters. The main advantage of the canister is that it is completely transparent. This will allow you to see at any time in what sequence the trays with fillers are installed, and thanks to the transparent body, you can constantly monitor the water level in the filter.

The "head" is installed on the upper part of the case and is attached to it with special large clamps.

Biofilter Jebo Trays 829 are as follows.

As we can see from the picture, each tray has a convenient handle and a special hole. When the trays are stacked on top of each other, the holes form a single channel through which the purified water flows back into the aquarium. The filter kit also includes fillers for trays:

1. Fine ceramic rings;

2. Coarse ceramic rings;

3. Activated carbon (see figure below);

4. Bio-rings are porous (see figure below);

5. Coarse sponge (see figure below).

In addition, all trays contain special synthetic cotton wool (service life - three months).

As mentioned above, two hoses are supplied with each filter. In this case, the hoses are of different diameters: the injection hose has an inner diameter of 16 mm, and an outer one - 22 mm; the inlet hose has an inner diameter of 12 mm and an outer diameter of 16 mm. Different hose diameters create pressure in the filter head, which helps the pump itself.

The flute on the discharge tube serves to break the powerful pressure of water that comes from the filter pump into smaller jets. Also, the flute performs the function of aeration, that is, it fills the aquarium water with oxygen.

When choosing a filter for your aquarium, remember to pay attention to how much water the filter is designed for. After all, if you buy a filter, for example, designed for an aquarium with a volume of up to 150 liters and install it in an aquarium with a volume of 250 liters, then the filtration will be insufficient, which can lead to negative consequences and even to the death of fish!
