After the excitement around the first Korean business slider SGH D500 subsided, the weaknesses of the device became more and more noticeable, among which the main one was the lack of support for removable memory cards. And now, just six months later, a worthy successor to the "five hundredth", the same black, elegant, but now even more functional, settled in the major league of business.
Design
The appearance on the market of Samsung SGH D600 by no means went unnoticed, but the new product cannot win the laurels of its predecessor. The latter was remarkable for its originality, while the D600 is an updated version of the phone with improved qualitative and quantitative characteristics. Top reasons to buy this phone: Better camera and better screen. The display on a phone is truly the best that a phone has ever seen. It should be noted that the image component of the phone has grown in strength: it is not just a device for business people, but a functional handset for a serious person who pays considerable attention to his image and follows technological innovations. This, by definition, should be the potential owner of the SGH D600.
Outwardly, one cannot fail to notice the increased similarity with the SGH E630, but in general, this slider is more elegant than the SGH D500, although it is larger than its predecessor. The main flaw in the ergonomics of the SGH D500 has been fixed: the numeric keypad buttons are now more convex, which makes it much more convenient to dial numbers and messages. By the way, the weight of the last two D-series phones turned out to be exactly the same - 99 grams. The side keys remain the same: they are volume control during a call and quick access to taking photos. But the location of the lens of the built-in camera has changed. If in the closed state of the D500 it was completely hidden behind the sliding halves of the slider, then here the delicate glass is not protected by anything from aggressive environmental influences. A closer look at the side reveals a TransFlash memory card slot covered with a flap. A full-fledged hot swap is implemented in the tube, which is good news. Still, it will be difficult for an ordinary layman to distinguish the new product from the Samsung D500. For this category of people, the external differences between the two phones will seem purely cosmetic.
The main visual change in the phone is the screen size. If its dimensions have not increased much, then the resolution is almost doubled, and now it is 320x240 pixels (QVGA). Keep in mind that by purchasing Samsung D600 now, you will be able to reasonably claim that the display in your phone is one of the best for at least another six months. In fact, larger screens are found only in PDAs, and these devices, as a rule, are bulky and will obviously not be suitable for the role of a fashion phone. The display supports 262K colors.
The quality of the display is especially felt when viewing photos taken in bright sunny weather. The abundance of colors, rich colors and realism of the picture are simply amazing. In the sun, the display does not even try to fade or fade, but some darkening is still present. But indoors, such a screen is simply out of competition.
The settings for the monitor do not differ from the previous model, there is a standard selection of wallpapers, as well as font colors, their location, and the like.But something new has appeared: now you can set as wallpaper not only a static picture or animation, but also a video, including one shot by the built-in camera of the phone. The function is very interesting, especially at first, especially since very few phones today support it. The screen is quite power-hungry: of all the functions of the phone, the lion's share of electricity is spent on the display, so if you are going to watch a video for a long time, immediately get a spare battery.
By the way, under the screen there is no opening support, traditional for Samsung sliders. Instead, there is a metal bridge, which does not complicate the opening / closing process at all. The movement of the opening mechanism is easy, you don't have to make any special efforts.
Functionality
The menu layout in the device remains the same, though the icons and font size have changed. In our opinion, menu animation has become stricter than in D500, cold shades prevail. But this menu has not lost its charm, on the contrary, such a solution makes it possible to make not only the exterior, but also the inner design of the tube more aristocratic.
The main software innovations of the SGH D600 are the Pixel Viewer utility, which allows you to view office applications right on the phone screen, since the display resolution allows you to do this with comfort. All MS Office files and PDFs can be opened without any problems. However, there are some nuances here: when trying to open a file created in Word with a volume of more than 1 MB, the phone gave an error message. Let's hope that in the serial versions of the firmware it will be possible to view files of any size. By the way, the set with the phone includes a TV-OUT cable, which will certainly come in handy. We insert the cables into the connectors of the TV, then we connect to the phone, and now a picture of the menu appears on the screen. In addition to viewing documents from the Picsel Viewer, you can watch any standard applications, full screen video, photos, and even play games. By the way, the TV is not limited to displaying the picture, but also reproduces sound - here's the music center for you. These functions are unique and cannot be found in other popular phones. By the way, if you often hold presentations and have to carry a bulky projector and laptop with you, then all this can now easily replace the Samsung D600.
Such a popular function as an MP3 player is known to us from the SGH D500, but there it was impossible to use the phone as a full-fledged player due to the lack of an expansion slot. Here you will find exactly the same application for playing music, with the exception that from now on there will be as much memory as you want thanks to the T-Flash slot located in the corner. Another innovation is the ability to play audio through Bluetooth headphones in stereo. Since wireless stereo headphones are a rather rare thing, we were not able to check the implementation of this function. The sound quality and volume are excellent, there are no complaints here, but it's a pity that while listening to music, the user will not be able to dial SMS or play Java games - the player in minimized mode, alas, does not work.
The dictaphone deserves special attention. With Samsung D600 you will not be limited either in the number of recordings or in their duration. The only thing to complain about is the impossibility of recording the conversation. But it is very convenient to use the dictaphone during round tables, lectures and meetings. In terms of microphone sensitivity, it may well replace a digital voice recorder.
The camera, as announced, is 2-megapixel with a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 pixels. Macro mode and autofocus are absent, but there are many effects, a built-in backlight lamp, and frames shot with a resolution of 320x240 pixels can be enclosed in interesting frames. Video is recorded in high quality at 352x288 pixels. Videos can be viewed immediately on the TV screen thanks to the TV OUT function.
Outcomes
The phone is more convenient to use than SGH D500.Basically, this effect is achieved through a modernized keyboard and a larger screen. However, at the same time, the manufacturer managed to maintain the compact dimensions of the tube, which may well act in both the fashion and business segments. A standard battery was enough for us to work properly for two days. During this time, the phone was practically not left alone, the captured frames were measured in dozens, if not hundreds, and the total talk time was about an hour. The sound in the speaker is excellent, speech is transmitted without distortion, playing melodies and MP3 compositions through external stereo speakers also leaves a pleasant impression.
