Dell U2913wm monitor review

Dell U2913wm

Appearance

The Dell U2913wm looks like a huge wide panel with a 21: 9 aspect ratio and a very thin bezel. Mounts the display on a functional stand similar to that used in the Dell UltraSharp line. The display is easily attached to the stand, and it is securely fixed on it. When assembled, the Dell U2913wm monitor takes up a lot of desktop space, but looks very impressive.

The display panel is quite thin, and with its considerable dimensions, the visual impression is created that the thickness of the case is even less than it actually is. Model Dell U2913wm refers to the so-called "frameless" monitors, because its frame does not protrude above the surface of the matrix, but goes flush with it. At the same time, both the matrix and the frame are covered with protective glass, which prevents their damage. A thin border of black plastic runs along the perimeter of the protective glass, which expands at the bottom of the Dell U2913wm monitor and protrudes one centimeter above the level of the protective glass towards the user. In the center of this protrusion is the manufacturer's logo, and in the right corner of this protrusion there are touch-sensitive buttons for controlling the monitor, including the touch-sensitive power button.

When turned off, the display bezel is invisible, and the Dell U2913wm monitor itself looks like a monolithic design.

The back panel is made of matte plastic and thickens slightly towards the bottom, where the interface panel is located. Another thickening can be seen in the center of the right side edge in the place where two USB 3.0 ports are brought to it.

The main interface panel contains an extensive set of interfaces, allowing you to connect your Dell U2913wm monitor to any signal source. It contains an audio output, a VGA analog video output, a full-size DisplayPort video output and its mini DisplayPort version, a DVI-D video output, an HDMI digital video output, two more USB 3.0 connectors, a port for connecting to a desktop USB port, and a DP Out interface, which allows you to connect two monitors in series.

The reliable and functional stand of the Dell U2913wm monitor, through which the user can change the height of the display, change its angle and rotate the display, cannot but rejoice. Due to the large diagonal of the screen, there is no function of flipping the monitor into portrait mode.

Management and settings

In the lower right corner of the front bezel of the Dell U2913wm monitor, there are four identical white dots representing the monitor touch buttons. In normal mode, the three leftmost buttons are inactive, and only after pressing the rightmost white "dot" button, the rest of the menu buttons become active. It is after clicking on the far right white "point" that the "Quick Menu" is called, in which you can adjust the contrast and brightness, and also go from it to the "Main Menu".

The “Main Menu” on the Dell U2913wm is the same as on the rest of the Dell UltraSharp Series monitors. The menu is convenient and clear and will not cause any difficulties even for users who use a Dell monitor for the first time.

In addition to the standard settings, you can manually select which of the video outputs to use in the menu. Also in the menu, the user can change the color mode by choosing one of the presented ones, or by choosing the Custom Color mode, in which you can manually change the color settings according to the RGB color palette. Also in the menu there is a mode in which the user can choose the color temperature at will in the range from 5000K to 10000K (in six steps).

In the settings menu, there is a mode called PBP, which allows you to split the screen into two identical parts and show data from the first source on one half, and from the second one on the other. To do this, in a pair to the already selected video output, from which it is necessary to broadcast the signal, it will be necessary to select an additional video output. There is one limitation in the mode - you cannot use the HDMI and DVI-D video outputs at the same time.

In the settings, you can select the value of the color gamut. For Windows computers, this is a PC item with a gamma value of 2.2, and for Mac computers, this is an item with the same name and a color gamut value of 1.8.

Matrix operation

At the heart of the monitor Dell U2913wm is a 29-inch matrix with a resolution of 2560 × 1080 pixels, manufactured by LG. The matrix is made using AH-IPS technology, has a W-LED backlight and the usual matte coating, which prevents glare from the surface of the screen. As a result, the picture on the Dell U2913wm monitor, as well as on all monitors with a matte display coating, has a slight "crystalline" effect. Due to the fact that the resolution is 2560 x 1080 pixels, the owner of the monitor will have to use the DVI-D cable that comes with the kit and pulls out such a high resolution to the unusual DVI cable, which is used for monitors with a smaller diagonal.

The user should not have problems looking at the small elements of the Windows operating system interface, since all the icons and pictograms displayed on the display are large enough. But in order to cover the image at both ends of the screen, you will have to drive more often with your head and eyes.

In addition to the Dell U2913wm monitor itself, stand, warranty card and manual, each user will be able to find a calibration sheet in the package, which indicates that the monitor has been specially and accurately adjusted at the manufacturer's factory.

Synthetic tests have validated the high-end factory calibration that makes the Dell U2913wm fully usable out of the box. There is no need for user calibration or manual adjustment of individual parameters. The color temperature is flat and reference (6500K) at all gray levels. The color gamut is larger than the sRGB reference gamut. The color scheme is even with slight fluctuations from 2.1 to 2.2.

The contrast of the matrix is 650: 1. The maximum backlight brightness is 312 cd / m2. In different parts of the matrix, you can observe quite large differences in brightness, which, of course, are primarily associated with the large screen area of the Dell U2913wm, which needs to be evenly illuminated. The maximum difference was 88 cd / m2. And yet it is impossible to notice the unevenness of the backlight with the naked eye, so this defect can hardly be called a big drawback.

Competitors

The main competitors of the Dell U2913wm model are the AOC Q2963PM and LG 29EA93-P monitors, which have similar specifications. At the same time, the LG 29EA93-P monitor costs the same as the Dell U2913wm monitor, and the AOC Q2963PM monitor costs less for similar characteristics.
