HOW TO CHOOSE A TEATER FOR A NEWBORN - how to teach a newborn to a pacifier

The surest way to choose the “right” pacifier for your newborn is to orient yourself with the mother's nipple.

When the mother takes the baby away from the breast, the shape of the nipple takes on a certain shape. It will tell you which dummy is best for the baby.

The types of pacifiers are different, but their shape does not affect the formation of the bite. The wrong one appears due to a genetic predisposition, and not because the baby sucks on the nipple.

Let's figure out which form of a dummy is better.

  • Orthodontic (oblique and flattened) promotes the correct positioning of the tongue in the mouth, develops and strengthens the lower jaw.

  • Anatomical (flattened oval) evenly distributes pressure to the palate.
  • The cherry (rounded) resembles a baby's mother's nipple.

The size of the shield on the nipple should be no more than 5 cm and always with a recess for the spout so that the baby can breathe freely. The holes in the shield are for free air flow. Otherwise, saliva will accumulate and irritate the skin around the mouth and on the chin.

An air valve integrated in the mouthpiece makes the pacifier soft and elastic. The nipple "diverges" during sucking, weakens the vacuum and reduces pressure on the palate. The child likes to suck on such a pacifier because it does not fill its tiny mouth.

Which nipple is better: latex or silicone?

Both types do not cause allergies in the baby.

  • Latex (mustard-colored) - made from the milk of rubber trees. It contains proteins, amino acids and natural polymers. These nipples are softer and more elastic than silicone nipples. They are warm to the touch and stretch, so they are suitable for weakened and premature babies, as well as those with teething.
  • Silicone (transparent) is made from synthetic material. It does not absorb odors and does not deform when boiled. Unlike latex, silicone is resilient and retains its shape for a long time. The pacifier is easy to clean. It is good for a full-term baby with a pronounced sucking reflex.

How often to change the pacifier

  • Latex is porous and wears out quickly. Microcracks are formed in it, in which microbes "settle". The fact that it's time to change the nipple - you will understand by the smell. Or when you notice that the nipple is sticking together. Latex pacifiers should be replaced every one and a half to two months.
  • Silicone, unlike latex, does not soften during use, but becomes harder and crumbles. Therefore, it is easy to bite through it. Change such a pacifier after 2-3 months.

How do pacifiers differ by baby's age?

Manufacturers take into account the age and development of the baby.

  • For newborns and premature babies, they offer small and lightweight.
  • Bigger kids - more.

The age classification of pacifiers is arbitrary. From experience, I will note: my baby refused to suck on a small papilla. She fell out of his mouth. Bought more - it went more fun.

Common grades by age:

  • since birth,
  • up to 6 months,
  • older than 3 months,
  • more than 6 months,
  • over 12 months,
  • from 18 months.

By observing the development of your baby, you will know when it is time to change the nipple.

How to accustom a newborn to a dummy

Teach the nipple if the child is restless: he often picks up the breast or does not fall asleep for a long time. The dummy satisfies the sucking reflex if there is no mother's breast nearby. When sucking, the hormone cholecystokinin is produced, which soothes the baby.

When trying to teach a baby to nipple, buy three types at once - anatomical, orthopedic and cherry. Give it immediately after feeding (remember to boil it!). If you didn't like it, spat it out, then after the next feeding try to give another one. He'll take some.

Love your kids!
