Over the past few years, Samsung has preferred to release its flagship devices in a slider form factor. The first such phone was Samsung D500. This was followed by the innovative D600 model, which introduced features such as office document viewing and video output for the first time. Samsung D900 is the "successor" of the D600, but based on a new platform and incorporating all the latest innovations (at the time of release) in the field of "telephony".

First impressions

Externally Samsung D900 makes an ambiguous impression. On the one hand, its appearance is quite pleasant and harmonious. On the other hand, a similar style is often found in other Samsung devices, so many users are already fed up with it. Although the perception of design is a purely individual thing, and someone deliberately discreet D900 on the contrary, you may like it. The black housing has an interesting combination of textures: the insert around the display is made of glossy plastic, while all other elements are made of matte material that resembles rubber to the touch. Fingerprints remain both on the "gloss" and on the "rubber", although not too noticeable.

Due to its small thickness (13 millimeters) and the correct proportions, the phone fits well in the hand. For greater comfort, the designers have equipped the model with a high-quality auto-finishing mechanism and a convenient finger rest, so that it can be opened without the slightest difficulty. The build quality is excellent, there is basically no backlash between the two halves of the slider. I was also pleased with the design of the caps for the interface connector and the memory card slot - the caps are attached with flexible legs and rotate 180 degrees. This allows you to hope that they will not break off over time.

Like most high-end Samsung terminals, D900 equipped with a TFT screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. In terms of quality, this display can easily plug almost any display installed in modern terminals, with the exception of the latest Nokia Symbian smartphones. Text appears crisp and easy to read, and images appear vibrant and colorful. On the street on a sunny day, the picture, however, fades, but remains completely readable.

The navigation block of the keyboard located under the screen is very convenient - the keys are large, the response threshold is clearly felt. The numeric keypad, as in all sliders, is absolutely flat, the buttons are medium in size and have a good tactile response. Some discomfort is caused only by the bottom row of keys, which are prevented from being pressed by the protrusion on the body of the device.

Technology with a human face

When developing the latest generation of terminals, Samsung has clearly paid great attention to "humanizing" the interface. An example of such an approach can be considered the Samsung D900 Living World function. When activated, the screensaver on the phone display depends on the country in which the user is located. For example, if this is Ukraine, he will see on the screen views of Kiev, after moving to Great Britain - a gloomy London landscape, and once in Russia, of course, Moscow's Red Square. As they say, a trifle, but nice. Let us emphasize that Living World is a unique opportunity, there is nothing similar in the devices of other manufacturers.

The menu is quite traditional for Samsung phones, the icons are drawn very neatly. It is offered, at choice, to install one of two design themes: with white icons on a black background or with colored ones - on black. You can move between adjacent sections of the menu by pressing the navi key horizontally. It's nice that fast digital navigation is supported in the menu of all levels. Among the shortcomings of the interface, it is worth noting only the too large font (many inscriptions do not fit on the screen entirely, despite even the high resolution) and sloppy russification (for example, the yellow color is for some reason called "lemon").

Business functions

Address book in Samsung D900 dynamic - the number of entries in it depends only on the amount of free memory in the device. Five phone numbers, an e-mail address and a text note can be written to one name, and each contact can be assigned an individual melody not only for calls, but also for incoming messages. In the information about the subscriber, there are different fields for the first and last name, and the name is always displayed first (for example, Vasily Petrenko and not Petrenko Vasily). The disadvantage of this solution is obvious - if there are 18 Sergeevs in the address book, they will be shown in a row. Moreover, there is no search by last name, which makes using the address book extremely inconvenient.

The diary contains up to 400 entries of four types ("meeting", "business", "anniversary", "other"). It allows you to create recurring events, and you can set the repeat interval and exceptions, which is very convenient. In "weekly" and "monthly" viewing modes, each type of event is displayed in its own color. In the same section of the menu, the user has the opportunity to set three alarms, which will be triggered only on certain days of the week.

One cannot but praise the built-in voice recorder - the maximum duration of an audio clip is one hour, but their number is not limited. The quality of the recording is very decent, the speech can be easily deciphered.

Like all modern terminals, Samsung D900 allows you to view Microsoft documents as well as Adobe Acrobat (PDF). Unfortunately, the TV cable is not included in the package.

Entertainment

One of the main "highlights" D900is undoubtedly a three mega pixel autofocus camera. In terms of characteristics, the photographic module is close to the one installed in Sony Ericsson K790 and K800 phones. The quality of the photos was frankly pleasing - the high definition of the image and the correct color rendition make the pictures suitable for printing in the most popular "landscape" format of 10 x 15 centimeters. Thanks to the autofocus lens, it became possible to implement the macro mode. Of the minuses, I would like to note the very slow focusing and "slowed down" shutter response (sometimes the image has time to "blur").

The integrated music player understands MP3 and AAC formats, it can work in the background. MP3 files with different bit rates, including variable ones, are played without any glitches. ID3 tags are not supported, but Russian file names are displayed correctly. The equalizer can operate in three modes ("jazz", "classic" and "rock"), but you cannot create custom settings. In general, the player is not bad, but for obvious reasons it is inferior to those installed in specialized so-called "music" phones. The bundled stereo headset provides satisfactory sound quality, but noise isolation leaves much to be desired. This means that in the subway, the rumble of trains is heard better than the music. It is a pity, but the possibility of connecting standard stereo headphones with a 3.5 mm jack to the device is not provided.

Other

Contents of delivery Samsung D900 can be safely called rich. In addition to the stereo headset, it includes a miniature Samsung WEP-200 wireless headset with a charger and case, a 256 megabyte microSD memory card, a data cable and a CD with Samsung PC Studio. This software is easy to install and has a nice interface, but not without drawbacks. For example, it cannot be used to copy information to a memory card - only to the terminal's own memory. In addition, the file transfer is very slow (30 megabytes was copied for almost five minutes). But setting up synchronization of the address book and calendar with Microsoft Outlook is literally two clicks away.

SUMMARY

Samsung D900 causes conflicting sensations. It is attracted by a convenient menu, a high-quality screen and a good camera. But an unsuccessful implementation of an MP3 player and a strange address book leave an unpleasant imprint.
