BenQ VW2420H LCD Monitor Review

Lcd monitor BenQ VW2420H

The display housing and stand are made of glossy plastic. The surface of the matrix is black, a cross between gloss and matte finish.

At the bottom right, there are five function buttons, the functions of which are indicated in white, corresponding to each button

The on-off button is located on the bottom right and in the front, framed in a ring-indicator. When turned on, the indicator has a pale green color, in standby mode it blinks orange, when completely turned off, the button is not backlit. The interface and power ports are located on the back in a small recess.

Also in the back in the lower corner is the port for Kensington Castle. The stand is made of one-piece plastic, and is reinforced at the bottom with a metal disc with rubberized pads. The base area is quite small, but due to the metal insert it is heavy, and the monitor unit itself, on the contrary, is lightweight, which makes the display stable. The hinge makes it possible to tilt the display forward or backward. The surface of the base is slightly inclined forward and concave, you can put various little things there. The monitor connects to the stand that comes with it without using screwdrivers or any other tools. This operation is performed by one person without much difficulty. And this will be important, since the weight of the monitor is about 4 kilograms. As for the design flaws, here we note a small angle of rotation of the panel down - up, but for monitors with a large diagonal this is not so critical.

To give the stand a more beautiful look, the designers made metal grooves around the base.

The display is equipped with an external power adapter, which is quite small in size and weight. In the working state of the display and when the brightness is turned on at maximum, the power adapter heats up, but not much.

Interface

In the presence of such computer inputs: analog VGA (supports component color difference signal) and digital DVD-D (supports HDCP), as well as consumer HDMI, accepting digital audio and digital video. Analog audio can be output using a 3.5mm minijack jack. DDC / CI communication can be disabled. Enumeration of inputs is carried out in the menu or by successive pressing of the button ENTER.

There is also an automatic search function for an active input, while the HDMI input can be removed from the search. When using digital signals HDMI and RGB-connection, it is possible to set the brightness range, and when using an analog connection, the type of color coding is also indicated: color difference or RGB. There is a possibility of setting a time interval (10-30 minutes), after which the monitor will automatically switch from sleep mode to off. The sound in the headphones is not very high in quality, there is no volume reserve, as well as low frequencies, although there was no hiss in the pauses.

Management, menus and localization

Navigation through the menu sections turned out to be not very convenient, but you can get used to it over time. The bottom menu bar displays a hint for the current button capabilities. When adjusting the image, the menu is always present on the screen, which makes it a little difficult to evaluate the changes being made. When the menu is not turned on, the left button is responsible for moving to the profile selection, the right button turns on the volume control, the ENTER button has already been mentioned above. If necessary, it is possible to change the location of the menu on the screen, select a timeout for automatic exit and turn on the lock.

There is an on-screen menu in Russian. The Cyrillic font on the menu is smooth and easy to read. The translation into Russian is good in quality. The monitor comes with a user manual and a CD-ROM with multilingual user manuals in PDF format (Russian versions are available).

Picture

The following standard settings are available: Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness (contour sharpness), Gamma (allows you to select a gamma correction profile), Color (selection of color temperature, consists of three profiles or manual adjustment of the intensity of three colors, also for color-difference signals when setting Saturation and Hue).

Preset types of settings are saved in several profiles. Depending on the current video signal type and the selected profile, some settings will be unavailable. For a more visual demonstration of what changes this or that profile, use the mode Senseye Demo, in it the screen is divided into two halves, on one part the current image, on the other adjusted.

BenQ VW2420H has only two modes of geometric transformation: The whole performs forced stretching of the picture over the entire area of the screen (suitable for broadcasting signals in 16: 9 format and anamorphic films in 4: 3 format). Mode Format - enlarges to the borders of the screen, keeping the original proportions, but in this mode the original proportions will be counted by pixels, therefore, in the case of broadcasting standard PAL and NTSC signals, these proportions will be slightly distorted. If there is interference at the edges of the picture, it is possible to turn on the mode Overscan, it enlarges the image slightly, and the noise is outside the display area. The availability of modes depends on the type of video signal.

When using a VGA connection, the automatic adjustment to the parameters of the VGA signal is correct and fast. True, the first 5 shades in the shadows, on a gray scale, do not differ in brightness from black. Supported resolutions up to 1920 × 1080 pixels. Low resolution interpolation to matrix resolution runs without artifacts, except for scaling standard for NTSC and PAL resolutions when connected to the DVI-D input. In 1920 × 1080 mode, both VGA and DVI connections are clearly visible stripes one pixel apart.

Cinema mode tests were conducted using a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player (component analog and HDMI connections). The monitor accepts 480i / p, 576i / p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals. When playing Full HD at 24fps, it has no support. In cases of interlaced signal, the picture was displayed in the fields. When using an HDMI connection, subtle gradations of shades differ in both shadows and highlights, using a component connection there is an irreparable blockage in the shadows, and the lightest and darkest gray shades on the gray scale have a rather noticeable color shift. Color and luminance definitions are very high and are only limited by the resolution of the input signal. When playing a Full HD signal, and with the overscan disabled, the picture is output 1: 1 without applying any interpolation. When scaling is working, artifacts do not appear, and even partial smoothing of the contours occurs. In general terms, the monitor does an excellent job of showing movie clips and cartoons that contain both bright and dark scenes.

LCD matrix test

Evaluation of color quality

One of the very important points in choosing a monitor is the type of matrix. Currently, there are three main technologies in the production of LCD panels: IPS, VA, and TN. New monitor model from BenQ - VW2420H- is one of the monitors of a whole model line using matrix types - VA (Vertical Alignment). More precisely, BenQ uses a version of this technology in these monitors - A-MVA matrix with LED backlight from AU Optronics. According to BenQ, they are almost the first in the world to use LED-backlighting with matrices of this type.

The performance of this monitor is very decent for its type of matrix: the response time rise + fall - 25 ms, gray-to-gray - 8 ms.For a picky eye, some blurring of the contours in dynamic games may be noticeable, but to notice this you will have to carefully peer into the picture. One way or another, this feature should be taken into account by fans of "shooters".

To assess the character of the increase in brightness on a gray scale, we measured the brightness of 17 shades of gray using various values of the parameter Gamma (DVI connection). The graph below shows the obtained gamma curves (in the figure caption, the number in brackets is the exponent of the approximating power function).

Hardware testing gave a good result for the uniformity of the white field and very high contrast. At first glance, the black field is dark and uniform, but when the eyes adapt in the dark, you can see the insignificant flare inherent in VA-matrices from the corners to the central part.

If you enable the function DynamicContrast, in pictures with dark images, the brightness will decrease automatically, and vice versa: in light images, it will increase, while the rate of change in the brightness of the backlight is small and amounts to several tens of seconds. Such a slow brightness adjustment is not very effective.

If you decrease the parameter Brightness then only the brightness of the backlight will change, in other words, without prejudice to the quality of the picture (the contrast and the number of distinguishable gradations will be the same), the brightness of the display can be changed in large ranges, which makes it possible to work or watch movies without straining your eyes in any light. The modulation frequency of two hundred and forty hertz with an underestimated brightness will make the backlight flicker invisible.

Outcome:

So, BenQ VW2420H monitor we refer to universal monitors that are suitable for ordinary office work and the execution of non-professional graphics programs. Great for watching movies, as well as for slower games.

Pros:

  • Excellent picture quality (normal color rendering, excellent contrast, normal brightness)
  • 3 video inputs including HDMI
  • Excellent viewing angles
  • Menu in Russian

Minuses:

  • Inability to eliminate blockage in the shadows with a VGA connection
  • Poor quality analog audio output
