Review of Nokia Lumia 620 phone

Design

The Lumia 620 is the third phone Nokia launched with Windows Phone 8, but while the previous two models, the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 920 were practically flagship devices, this phone is clearly budget.

In terms of its characteristics, it is very similar to HTC Windows Phone 8S, it also has a dual-core processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, a 5 Mpx camera and a screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

Following the latest Nokia trend, the Lumia 620 is a very bright phone. It comes in seven different colors: yellow, red, blue, green, black, white and purple. The back cover can be changed, the quality of the material from which it is made resembles expensive polycarbonate, but the plastic from which the rest of the case is made looks a little cheap.

The phone has a small dimensions of 115.4 x 61.1 x 11 mm, although a little heavy for such a small phone (127 g). It fits well in the hand, all corners are smoothed out.

Above the screen, in the center, there is a speaker, and on the left is a 0.3 Mpx front camera. Below the screen are the Start, Back, Search buttons.

On the top edge there is a microphone on the left and a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the right.

At the bottom are a microUSB port and another microphone.

The left side of Nokia Lumia 620 is absolutely devoid of any buttons or connectors, while on the right side there are three physical buttons: a sound rocker, a power / lock button and a camera control button. The location of the buttons is good, you can easily reach the one you need.

Under the removable back cover there is a battery, microSIM and microSD slots (up to 64 GB).

The Nokia Lumia 620 has a rich set of wireless connections: Bluetooth, HSPA 3G, GPS and even NFC. The only thing that the phone does not have is 4G, but this service will still not be useful to you in our country.

Screen

The LCD screen of Nokia Lumia 620 is hardly modern, it has a size of 3.8 inches, a pixel density of 246 and a resolution of 800 x 480 (WVGA). Perhaps in terms of technology, the phone's screen is outdated, but the picture quality is excellent.

It also uses Nokia's ClearBlack technology. The colors are vibrant but natural, and the contrast is great for such an affordable phone.

There is a built-in light sensor that can set the brightness automatically, or you can adjust the brightness as you like.

The low pixel count smoothes out the visual optimization system from Windows Phone 8. The text in the operating system interface is carefully optimized and you will notice low screen resolutions only when you open an Internet browser or run third-party applications.

Interface

Nokia Lumia 620 has a standard Windows Phone 8 interface. On the lock screen, you can see the date, time and battery level.

After unlocking the phone, you are taken to the start page. There are no separate desktops, the screen is one long list of apps, made up of tiles of different sizes. Many apps are displayed as Live Tiles, they are very similar to widgets in the Android operating system, which means that there is no information inside these tiles. static. For example, the Calendar app will show you reminders of upcoming events, and People will scroll through the photos of your contacts.

Each tile can be removed, moved, or resized. You can also change the color scheme of the screen. Scrolling to the right takes you to a screen where you can find a list of all your apps and phone settings.

You can install the required applications from the Windows Store. Although this is one of the biggest problems of the Nokia Lumia 620. The number of applications for Windows Phone 8, even after so long, is rather limited and certainly not able to match the number of applications for Android or iPhone. This is especially noticeable in the games section, to somehow remedy the situation, the Nokia Lumia 620 offers integration with Xbox Live, an online service for the Xbox 360. By playing games you can earn points that you can then spend on Xbox products.

The most interesting applications are Nokia Music, which has access to a library of free ringtones, City Lens, which uses your camera to show restaurants and lounges, and Nokia Care, which guides your phone.Naturally, there are such standard applications as a calendar, calculator and alarm clock. As with all Windows phones, Microsoft Office and OneNote are installed here.

The mobile version of Microsoft Office works pretty well, you can create and edit Excel, Word and Powerpoint documents. The program is linked to Microsoft SkyDrive Cloud.

Another pretty interesting app is Kid Corner. With this program, you can create a desktop especially for children, blocking access to too violent games and e-mail.

Cards

The navigation applications in Nokia Lumia 620 do not cause any reproaches. Nokia Maps works great, you can also download maps to use the program offline. It is one of the best free apps in its class. And with Nokia Drive, your phone becomes a GPS navigator.

Another add-on is Nokia City Lens, this application allows you to estimate the location of your phone and show the nearest restaurants, hotels, vacation spots and transport interchanges. This program will be especially valuable for tourists.

the Internet

The phone uses Internet Explorer 10 as a browser. It loads pages quickly enough, problems arise only with full versions of sites. Browser control is standard, to zoom in / out the image you need to double-tap the screen. The location of the address entry line may seem unusual, it is located at the bottom. To the left of it is an icon for updating the current page, to the left is a menu for other options.

Phone book

The Nokia Lumia 620 uses the People application as a phone book. The main screen contains all the contacts that you have on your phone. They are displayed alphabetically, with small photographs next to the name. Contacts can be imported from SIM card, Facebook or other social service. At the bottom of the screen are a search button that helps you find a specific contact and a "+" button for adding new contacts.

In the personal card of each contact, you can indicate not only the name and phone number, but also the work address, date of birth, email address and much more. Contacts can also be integrated with social media accounts to receive constant updates.

Scrolling to the left from the contact's profile page, you will be taken to a page that shows all the updates for this contact in social services. Scrolling further to the left, you will be taken to a page where the history of calls and messages between you and this person is displayed.

Contacts can be combined into groups.

The dialing keyboard is standard for Windows Phone. There is no smart dial feature here, so it's best to use the People app to call people already in your address book.

When someone calls you, three buttons appear on the screen: answer, reset, or send a text message back. You can turn on the speakerphone, turn down the volume, hold and add the number to the rest of the contacts.

The sound is loud and clear, even in low signal areas, there is a noise canceling function, although the speaker of the phone sometimes creates an echo.

Communication

The program for sending SMS contains a list of message threads, sorted by newness. Opening one of the branches, you will see a list of messages arranged in a colored bubble.

Your messages appear on the right side of the screen, messages from other people on the left. The color of the bubbles is different and will depend on the selected color scheme. In addition to sending a text message, you can attach an image, video, contact card, or voice message.

There are three icons at the bottom of the main screen of the program. The first allows you to write a new message, which is necessary to send a message to people who are not on your list. The second icon allows you to log into Windows Live Messenger or Facebook chat. Using the third icon, you can delete message threads.

In addition to sending text messages, Nokia Lumia 620 has the ability to work with e-mail.The main page of the email application contains a list of all your emails, swiping to the side will take you to a page with unread messages.

By clicking on the "+" button at the bottom of the page, you get the opportunity to create a new email. The address can be entered manually or added from the phone book. You can attach additional files to the letter.

You can add different email accounts here.

Camera

The Nokia Lumia 620 has a 5 Mpx main camera and a front VGA 0.3 Mpx camera.

There are quite a lot of additional functions and settings here: shutter speed, ISO, white balance, LED flash, autofocus. As with other devices on Windows Phone 8, you can expand the camera's capabilities by downloading the so-called Lenses from the app store. Smart Shoot and Bing Vision are preinstalled.

Smart Shoot takes a series of photos from which you can choose the best, although the shooting speed is too slow for this function to be effective. Bing Vision is a QR and barcode scanner.

The quality of the photos is not the highest, but considering the price of the phone, it can be called quite normal. The detailing is good, the focusing also does not fail. Colors look a little oversaturated and unnatural, and if you're shooting in low light, the images are full of noise and chromatic aberration.

Video recording functions are more limited, you can change white balance, video quality, flash on / off and focus. Video recording is available at 720p, which is typical for phones in this price range.

Multimedia

The phone has good multimedia potential, despite not having the largest screen. Lumia 620 supports most of the popular file formats: Mpeg4, H.264, H.263, WMV, MP3, MP4, WAV, WMA, eAAC +.

Music

The music player is able to organize your music by artist, song, album or genre, you can also create playlists. Album art appears on the screen when a song is played. The songs can be listened to in order or shuffled. There is an equalizer mode, but it can only be accessed through the main settings menu.

During playback, control buttons appear on the lock screen. Although the external speakers are quite loud, the sound quality is not up to par. Therefore, it is better to listen to music with headphones.

The player has a built-in Xbox Music Store service where you can buy new songs.

In addition to the main Music + Video player, Nokia has installed its own music application, Nokia Music, into the phone. Functionally, they are very similar, except that Nokia's player also has Mix radio, with which you get access to the library of free Nokia Music Portal songs.

Unfortunately, there is no regular radio here.

Video

In terms of video playback, the functionality of the Music + Videos app is pretty basic. The player displays thumbnails of your video files by clicking on which you can play them. Player controls are simple, you can pause, rewind or play the next video.

Although the screen is a bit small for watching videos, the image quality is quite good and the colors are bright. Besides, such a phone is convenient to hold in hands for a long time.

There is no YouTube player installed here, but MetroTube is fully functional in terms of functionality.

Gallery

In addition to music and video, there is also a Photos app for viewing images. You can download them from the gallery on SkyDrive or set them as your lock screen wallpaper. There are also editing functions, which boil down to the ability to crop and rotate the image.

Battery

The Nokia Lumia 620 performs well in most areas of work. Unfortunately, the battery performance is not that good. A 1300mAh battery is installed here, which is quite small for a modern device. The manufacturer claims the Lumia 620 has a talk time of 9 hours and 50 minutes on 3G and 14 hours and 40 minutes on 2G, 331 hours of standby time and 61 hours of music playback.

If your phone is mostly in standby mode, and you only occasionally make calls or listen to music, then the device can work all day, or even more. However, if you intend to watch videos, play games and surf the Internet, then the battery charge will not last long. So, for example, the phone can only play about 5 hours of video without recharging. You can extend the operating time of your phone by dimming the brightness or activating the power saving mode.

Output

The Nokia Lumia 620 is an interesting budget phone based on the Windows Phone operating system that has a good range of features. This is a good alternative to budget Android phones, and the ability to change the back cover color will definitely appeal to the younger generation.
