HTC One S phone review

Design

In the One lineup, the HTC One S is intermediate between the HTC One X and the HTC One V. Although this phone does not have the functionality of top-end devices, it has many advantages, one of which is design. The One S is 7.8mm thick and is one of the thinnest phones HTC has released.

The body of the phone is almost entirely made of aluminum, apart from two areas of soft-touch plastic located near the camera and speaker, but this is necessary for the phone's signal. The aluminum is processed using a special method that makes the body stronger. It is four times stronger than anodized aluminum. Although some users note that the surface of the One S is too slippery. Besides, scratches appear on this phone quite easily.

On the top edge of the device there is a headphone jack and a power button for the phone. On the left side there is a microUSB connector, and on the right side there is a sound button. The phone has both main and front cameras.

There is a small plastic section on the top of the phone that opens up to reveal a microSIM slot. You have no way to replace the battery or add memory with a memory card. And this is definitely a negative point of the device, because the internal memory is only 16 GB, of which only 10 GB is available to the user.

Screen

The screen size is 4.3 inches and its resolution is 540 x 960 pixels. PPI is equal to 256. It is made using AMOLED technology, which makes the screen bright and saturated colors. But this is also the cause of the problems.

First, AMOLED screens lack accurate color reproduction. Colors appear unnaturally vibrant. Secondly, if you look at the screen from an angle, you will see a noticeable green / blue tint.

And thirdly, the screen uses PenTile technology, which means that instead of the traditional trio of pixels (red, blue, green), each pixel changes its color to green, blue-green, red. This means that the borders between light and dark areas will have a red or blue tint. This is especially noticeable if you are trying to read the text.

Work

The HTC One S is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260A Snapdragon dual-core processor with an Adreno 225 graphics accelerator. This processor uses the new Krait architecture, which is significantly superior to the previous version of Qualcomm's Scorpion used in the Desire line.

And while the graphics accelerator doesn't always handle resource-intensive games well, the phone is otherwise very fast.

Operating System and Interface

One of the biggest advantages of the HTC One line is that it runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. For example, released at the same time, the Sony Xperia S is still running on the previous version.

The manufacturer slightly redesigned the operating system so that it was more familiar to HTC users, and installed the Sense 4.0 interface.

From the lock screen, you have access to four applications (unfortunately, they cannot be changed). Once you unlock your phone, you will see the clock / weather / calendar widget that has been appearing on all HTC devices for a long time. The user has access to seven desktops and there is an opportunity to see their previews.

You can easily create folders with applications using the method familiar to iPhone users (just drag one application to another).

Phone book

The Phonebook interface has always been HTC's strong point. This application allows you to scroll through your contact list or find a person by name and number. Contacts are integrated with user accounts on Facebook and Twitter. As far as the call quality is concerned, it is excellent given the good noise cancellation system and the rather loud speaker.

Posts

The messaging system is also well developed. The only downside is that you cannot reduce the size of the email in order to read the email at once and completely. The virtual keyboard is great too. The buttons are quite large, making it easy to type quickly.

Cards

Considering that HTC One S is an Android phone, it naturally has GoogleMaps and Google Navigation installed. These apps perform as well as you'd expect from programs with excellent companion and maps views that include isometric views of buildings. You can also add transport and terrain. And Navigation gives you a free satellite navigation interface. However, HTC compulsively offers you its own Locations app when you try to find an address. Locations is also a pretty good app that uses previously downloaded maps without the need for an internet connection.

Applications

Additional applications include the HTC Watch video downloader. It isn't a top-notch program and does require an account creation, but Watch works surprisingly well.

Other positive additions are the integration with online storage Dropbox. Moreover, you not only get access to files that are in Dropbox, but these files will be immediately reflected in programs such as Gallery. You can set up automatic upload of all new photos. Plus, you get 25GB free for two years, although the standard account only allows you to get 2GB.

Internet browser

This part of the phone's work is also well developed. The speed of the device allows you to quickly load pages, and the Android interface with Flash support allows you to fully enjoy all the content of the sites.

HTC have developed their own version of the "Reading List" program, which is available on Apple phones. This program allows you to display pages with a minimum of images for easier reading. You can also download pages so you can read them offline later.

Bookmarks are available through the widget on the page or through the menu.

Multimedia

Given the lack of a microSD card slot, you'll have to connect your phone to your computer to download media. Fortunately, no additional software is required for this. The user has 16 GB of memory available.

When installing third-party applications, the phone can play any type of video files. Moreover, given the fast processor and screen, the video quality will be excellent, and you will be happy to watch the movie.

On the music side, the phone has added 7Digital file download service, as well as SoundHound and TuneIn internet radio integrated into the main music app. In addition, there is also a regular FM radio.

Naturally, you can't talk about the multimedia capabilities of this phone and not mention Beats Audio. Although the brand has actually brought quite a few extra features to the HTC One S. It's just an equalizer that can only be adjusted with headphones.

Camera

The HTC One S has the same 8-megapixel camera as the HTC One X. Of course, this camera does not set records in image quality, but it works quite well. HTC has placed the photo and video buttons on the home page of the app, so you don't have to change the mode. You can even take pictures while shooting video. There are also many filters here, such as Sepia and Vintage, and a large number of shooting modes, including HDR and Panorama.

But poor lighting in indoor shots is noticeable, as are pale colors and graininess. The HTC One S's camera works great outdoors, though.

Videos can be shot in 1080p and the quality is pretty decent. Plus, you can add filters as you shoot.

There is also a Movie Editor, which makes it easy to combine captured videos and photos into themed films. This program works well, although there are only three themes to choose from.

In HDR mode, the HTC One S takes decent pictures, although moving objects look a little blurry.

In addition to the rather familiar modes such as Panorama, Macro and Face Recognition, the One S has a Quick Shot mode.

Battery

HTC One S has a 1650 mAh non-removable battery. It's slightly larger than last year's Android phones. However, you still have to charge your phone every night, but at least your phone won't run out of power in the middle of the day, even if you use it a lot.

Output

It is rather difficult to draw any conclusions about the HTC One S. On the one hand, this is a very thin phone with a good screen, fast processor and a decent camera. And this is a significant improvement over previous generation phones. But, on the other hand, the phone has only 16 GB of memory and the AMOLED screen is far from ideal.
