What you need to know when choosing a fishing line

Choosing the right line is very important for both the beginner and the experienced angler. After all, when catching a trophy specimen, the success of playing depends not only on the skills of the fisherman, but also on the quality, thickness and type of fishing line! Today, on the shelves of shops, we see a lot of different lines: colored and transparent, thick and thin, braided and monofilament. A good fisherman knows that for each type of rod, reel or lure itself, you need to select a line with the appropriate characteristics. Also, different fishing lines are used for different types of fishing.

Types of woods

Currently, there are only two types of lines - monofilament and multifilament.

Monofilament line (monofilament), made of nylon (polyamide). The name speaks for itself - the line consists of one fiber. Depending on the production technology, the line may have different properties. For example, monofilament line is characterized by increased softness, elasticity and fits very well on a reel. Good for long distance casts. Mono lines can be made from several types of nylon - polymer. They have greater rigidity and tensile strength than monofilament. One of the subspecies of monofilament is high-polymer. Such a fishing line is produced according to modern technologies, using complex processes, thanks to which we can enjoy its new properties. High quality, additional features and, accordingly, the price is an order of magnitude higher than usual. High polymer mono lines can be sinking, high strength, not exposed to ultraviolet rays, etc.

Multifilament (braided) line more durable than monofilament. Thanks to this, she fell in love with many fishermen. Braid (as it is popularly called) exists of two types: classical (interwoven fibers) and interwoven fibers covered with a sheath. Multifilament line of the second type is visually very easy to confuse with monofilament, since they are very similar in appearance. Braided lines are highly durable and soft. But it is worth noting that the disadvantages of braiding are low elasticity and the complexity that arises when knots are knitted.

Mono or braid?

Monolesque

Benefits:

- does not freeze at temperatures below zero;

- more wear-resistant than a cord;

- invisible to fish.

Disadvantages:

- reduces the sensitivity of the tackle due to its stretching properties;

- has a memory that negatively affects the casting distance;

- less durable in comparison with a braid of the same diameter;

- not quite suitable for fishing at great depths with strong currents.

Network

Benefits:

- increases the sensitivity of the tackle due to the absence of stretching, provides a good hooking;

- there is no memory;

- great strength.

Disadvantages:

- freezes at temperatures below zero;

- when fishing in places with shells and sharp stones - low wear resistance.

Main characteristics of the line

Line diameter - the main characteristic. The first thing you pay attention to when buying. Depends on the diameter: the maximum weight of the fish that can be pulled out without breaking the line; casting distance; bait weight; extensibility. The use of light baits requires a smaller diameter fishing line, heavier ones - a larger cross section.

Breaking load - an equally important characteristic that determines the strength of the line. The higher the breaking load, the stronger the fishing line and the higher the chances of getting a trophy specimen into your cage.

Elasticity characterizes the ability of the line to stretch under the influence of force.Greater elasticity slightly softens the sharp impact of the fish, thereby reducing the sensitivity of the gear.

Softness greatly affects the casting distance. The soft line has no memory, allowing the line to come off the reel without the “serpentine effect”.

Coloration fishing line allows it to adapt to different colors of water. In some bodies of water, coloration plays an important role. If the line is invisible in the water, the chance to catch even the most cautious fish increases.

Wear resistance no less important characteristic that largely determines the life of the line. Friction, ultraviolet rays, stretching, exposure to negative temperatures - all this negatively affects her condition. A line with high wear resistance will last longer. In many respects, wear resistance depends on the outer coating and the technology for the production of the line. A high-quality coating protects the inner fibers well from chafing and other mechanical damage.

Weight fishing line also plays a small role. For example, you are fishing with a float rod, and the wind rises - the line with a low specific gravity will be carried away by the waves, pulling the float behind it. Peaceful fish will not particularly want to swallow the bait if it "runs away" from it!

Resistance to negative temperatures - the ability of the fishing line to maintain its structure, not to crack or embrittle at temperatures below zero. This property of the tackle is very important for fishermen who prefer winter fishing.

Line storage

With careless use, even the most expensive and high-quality fishing line quickly deteriorates. To prevent this from happening, you must adhere to some simple rules:

- line should be stored in a dry, dark, cool place;

- do not expose to sudden temperature changes;

- wind the reels tightly onto the spool, otherwise, with a good hook, the upper turns will overwhelm the weak lower ones, disrupting the structure of the fishing line;

- Before the first use, the line should first be soaked in water.
