Nokia N80 Review

Austerity and simplicity

The design of the device can be called austere, although the light metal of the front panel gives it the necessary share of attractiveness. Despite the fact that N-series smartphones are positioned by Nokia as "multimedia computers", the look of Nokia N80 is more typical for business terminals than for entertainment ones.

The phone case gives the impression of solid reliability. The assembly is of high quality, there is practically no backlash between the halves of the case. Interestingly, the N80 is not equipped with an auto-finishing mechanism. Today, such a mechanism is often found even in the cheapest sliders, so its absence in a top-class model is difficult to explain. However, the upper part slides easily, so you don't have to exert excessive force to open the device. The dimensions of the N80 are compact enough to be carried in a pants or jacket pocket (the phone is still too heavy for a shirt pocket).

One of the strengths of this terminal is its display. Its resolution by "telephone" standards is very high (352x416 pixels), thanks to this the picture looks extremely smooth and clear. The color rendition is also at a high level, we especially liked the large viewing angles: when viewed from the side, the image is not inverted, although there is some color distortion. In bright sunlight, the screen behaves perfectly - it fades slightly, but remains completely readable. We can conclude that there are few smartphones that can match the Nokia N80 in terms of display quality.

Navigation unit keys are active even when the device is closed. They are of medium size and easy to use. The digital block also practically does not cause any complaints, with the exception of one: the buttons of the upper row are located too high, which is why the finger rests against the upper half of the slider when typing. The phone has a light sensor that detects if it's time to turn on the keyboard backlight. It is white for the number keys, and blue for the navigation block.

The interface of the N80 is convenient, it looks exactly the same as that of any other device based on the third edition of the S60 platform. As the saying goes, stability is a sign of skill. Noteworthy is the very good rendering of the fonts - even small letters are read without problems. "To blame" for this high screen resolution.

Three megapixels

Nokia N80 is the first phone on the Ukrainian market equipped with a three megapixel camera. The application interface for working with the camera is adapted for the horizontal mode of its operation. The maximum image resolution is 2048x1536 pixels.

The camera is not autofocus, but it supports the macro function. Switching to macro mode is carried out using a lever located on the rear panel next to the lens. There is also a flash. The camera has a fairly large number of settings, including the red-eye reduction effect. The user can adjust the white balance at his discretion, make an exposure compensation. Various filters can be applied to photographs: "black and white", "sepia", "negative".

The pictures themselves leave conflicting impressions: on the one hand, they are better than those taken by the overwhelming number of cameras built into mobile phones, but on the other, we expected more from a camera with a three-megapixel matrix. In the maximum resolution, one frame takes from 800 kilobytes to one and a half megabytes.

The N80 can record video with a maximum resolution of 352x288 pixels. In the maximum quality mode, videos are encoded in MPEG-4 format, in all other versions - in 3GP. One clip of 20 seconds in maximum quality takes up 1.4 megabytes.

Like most UMTS phones, the Nokia N80 is equipped with an additional VGA-resolution camera. It can be used either to make video calls (subject to the support of this function by the operator's network), or to take self-portraits.

No wires

The media player in this phone is similar to that integrated into other N-series devices (the N80 supports the Express Music package). "Nokievskaya" implementation of the music player is one of the best on the market in terms of functionality and convenience. What is especially nice, ID3 tags in Russian and Ukrainian languages are fully supported. FM-receiver (it, as usual, works only when a headset is connected) pleases with good sensitivity and high sound quality.

One of the most interesting features of the phone is wireless Wi-Fi. Nokia N80 boasts all the security features of wireless networks (WEP, WPA, WPA2) and has a large number of settings. The terminal complies with the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) standard, which allows you to transfer music to your home audio system, photos to a printer or display device, and even video to a TV (while, of course, all listed devices must also "understand" UPnP). True, at present this function is practically useless, it is only a demonstration of the possibilities that will be available to a wide range of users only after a while.

The internal memory of the device is 40 megabytes, which is, of course, completely insufficient for a multimedia smartphone. Expansion of memory resources is available by means of mini-SD cards (a 128 MB card is included in the delivery set), but even this saves the situation only partially - for normal operation of many applications, a sufficient amount of free memory is required in the terminal itself.
