For fans of practical and highly functional Nokia devices, it is worth starting with the history of the evolution of phones with QWERTY technology. The first in this series was released Nokia E71, but it was not very popular. But the next model has made a kind of revolution in the perception of buyers of such phones. And this E72 is a direct continuation of the Nokia E71, but with improved features and stylistically similar to the E63. And, despite the fact that these phones in some sense began to be perceived as pointless in the field of mobile phones, attention from them shifted to the main competitor - the Nokia E5 phone.
In the names of Nokia models, any logic has ceased to be traced. Or rather, with the appearance of the one letter - one digit marking, the serial production of phones came to an end. Earlier it was clearly clear that models with the same letters in the names are a continuation or predecessors of the same line, with the addition of any functions or improvement of characteristics. An example is the series N96 - N81 - N78 or E75 - E72 - E52. They were united by style, general outline and concept. Now the name of the model serves only as a name for a specific model - it is very difficult to find brothers by name by including logic. And again an example: the Nokia E5 model for some reason becomes a follower of the Nokia C5 model. This, of course, is a subjective opinion, but earlier it was much easier to understand the abundance of products presented.
So, Nokia E5 continues the line of models after E72 and E63. And an unexpected fact is the price of the new model, the starting price of E5 will coincide with the price of E72, at the time when the latter had already left the market. And E5 can be safely called the most affordable phone, the keyboard of which is made using QWERTY technology. The price reduction affected the external parameters of the device, the E5 turned out to be noticeably larger, thicker and less elegant. And since it has long been customary in our country to refer to the European market, it is worth noting that Nokia E5 has won the favor of consumers in Europe, and its sales exceed the demand for budget models. The situation is about the same with Nokia C3, and based on this information, we can safely say that these two models are the main contenders for the title of “the most purchased keyboard smartphones” for the entire period of their existence on the market.

Ergonomic performance and design.
The difference between Nokia E5 and E72 is mainly in design, functionality has not deteriorated or improved. The photo below gives an opportunity to consider all the differences between the E5 and the E71.
The dimensions of the screen are preserved, as is the area of the keyboard, the set of elements is also not damaged in any way. And against the background of the first model, the novelty looks cheaper, one might say budget. It is difficult to attribute the glossy screen bezel to the advantages, it is easily soiled and does not look very impressive. But the quality of the material and the performance of the rear panel will please. It is made of stainless steel, the lid is equipped with additional side fasteners.
Visually, the thickness of the Nokia E5 seems to be the same as that of other QWERTY smartphones. And this is due to the rounding of the corners and ends. In fact, the novelty is thicker by 3 millimeters.The body is ergonomic, it is comfortable to fit in the hand, there will be no problems. The plastic of the casing is of high quality (otherwise it is extremely rare for Nokia), prints are not noticeable on it.
The manufacturer practically abandoned glossy elements in this model. It was decided to abandon the off key, from voice control and a dictaphone, only the most necessary buttons for adjusting the volume were left on the outer edges. These keys are quite stiff and a little awkward to use them blindly. There is a micro-USB connector hidden under a plastic flap, a 3.5 mm headset jack and, of course, a thin socket for a charger. All these communications are located on the upper edge, which is very familiar, correct and logical.
The rear panel is traditionally occupied by the built-in camera lens. The camera is 5 megapixel, there is no autofocusing, but the flash is saved. It has already been noted that the cover is fastened sealed with two latches. Under this cover there is a battery, under the battery there is a micro-SD slot for an expansion card. There is no possibility of hot swapping the card, for some it may seem like a significant disadvantage. As a result, it can be noted that the whole Nokia E5 is very practical.
Screen.
The display will not cause any complaints when working indoors, but on the street everything changes dramatically, on a sunny day it is difficult to make out something on the screen. There is no mirror substrate available either. You won't be able to talk a lot about the screen. The just-used matrix matches the usual budget smartphone variant.
Keyboard.
So, the QWERTY keyboard of the Nokia E5 is a combined keyboard E72 and E71. The first phone borrows the softness of rubberized plastic, from the second - the placement of symbols on the keys. The period and comma returned to their usual place, and the elongated space returned. For a candy bar with a QWERTY keyboard, such a keyboard design is very good, but it may not be better to find it.
The Russified version of the keyboard looks exactly, four letters - Ж, Э, Х, b - are located in the upper case. The devices of this class suffer from localization, unlike Nokia. The same uppercase characters can be entered after switching, or simply hold down the desired key for a longer time. The keyboard also contains keys for launching some functions. For example, turning on the flashlight is assigned to the space bar, activating Bluetooth and silent mode can also be activated using the keyboard.
The navigation part of the keyboard was deprived of additional function keys, leaving only one button, which is responsible for messages and e-mail. The advantage of this key is that its assignment can be changed. There is no way to scroll through lists using a touch element. The navigation block, unlike all the keyboard buttons, is made of metal.
On the front panel, or rather in the navigation key, there is an indicator of unread events. It will signal an unread message with a white light, after such a period of time, as the user indicates, at least 5 minutes, maximum 2 hours, or you can turn it off altogether. The indication can be configured, so that when not only messages are received, but also calls, e-mails, the indicator will also flash.
Battery.
Nokia E5 uses an upgraded 1200 mAh battery. It provides the same battery life as the Eseries BP-4L. Does smaller capacity provide the same runtime? Yes exactly! And this is justified by the fact that the monitor is less bright and the overall optimization of energy consumption. The declared talk time is 11 hours, and the phone will stay in standby mode for 18 days.
And here are the real indicators. With full operation, the battery will last 4 days, you can listen to music for 32 hours, with a working GPS-navigator, the battery will last for 5 hours, as well as for downloading data using Wi-Fi.Very good results, practically the best in this segment.
Communications.
It won't be possible to tell a lot about the communications of Nokia E5, or rather not worth it. Almost all indicators remained at the old level. From the connectors: you can connect to a computer using micro-USB, you can listen to music thanks to a 3.5 mm jack and, of course, a two mm charging jack.
There is a standard USB - 2.0 and support for the Mass Storage mode. When you connect your phone to a computer via a USB cable. You will be given the opportunity to choose in what capacity the device will be used: as a disk drive, Media Transfer, PC Suite, Connect PC to Web or Image transfer. When connected, a memory card and, of course, built-in memory are available. This transmission takes place at a speed of up to 3.5 Mb / s. Another function of the USB cable is battery charging.
Data transmission via Bluetooth is possible at a speed of up to 130 Kb / s. It is possible to configure the Bluetooth activity time in the range from one minute to one hour.
The standard for business class smartphones is Wi-Fi with b / g standard. There are settings for checking access to the WLAN network every 1, 2, 5, 10 minutes and displaying a certain icon on the screen. Do not forget that this kind of network scan increases power consumption. And there are also VoIP calls available using a W-Fi connection. Connection parameters can be defined either manually, or you can provide automatic configuration to your phone.
Memory and performance.
Nokia E5 will please with higher performance compared to E72, despite the same processor frequency. It's all about the correct optimization, as well as the RAM memory - it was doubled. To get to the menu, to the gallery, to messages, contacts and other standard menu items, Nokia E5 will take a split second. It is the amount of RAM that ensures such a speed of reaction and work, and, therefore, the main advantage of the E5. There is information on the Internet that the Symbian operating system, which is used in E5, can simultaneously support 74 active applications.
Software implementation.
Compared with the previous models of the Eseries series, changes have been made slightly, an updated version of the desktop has appeared. It is possible to scroll through the list of favorite contacts (icons are displayed on the desktop); it is possible to "select" up to 20 contacts. Other fields are also saved - a link to a calendar, Wi-Fi activation, application shortcuts, and more. The desktop is designed quite informatively, while it does not seem overloaded
It is possible to select, in addition to the described option, one of the two usual modes. They called them personal and business. Their essence is that for each of them you can set your own set of shortcuts, an individual view of the mode, a set of applications, a specific theme and set a background image. For example, in Business mode, all settings related to business are enabled. Those. a shortcut to e-mail, VoIP, Wi-Fi, Search, a shortcut to an organizer on the desktop, a list of planned tasks, and so on. In Personal Mode, most of the features are disabled, and thus significantly relieves the desktop.
Of course, it is possible to customize the mode as it is convenient for a specific user, you can change the name, enable or disable certain options, shortcuts. Switching the mode is easy, this opportunity is provided in three places - in the personalization setting, in the menu, on the desktop.
An interesting point can be called a significantly changed mail client. The manufacturer declares this device as the most convenient for working with mail programs. The set comes standard with a pact of office programs, namely the traditional QuickOffice, with which you can edit documents. This version is complete, it does not require additional settings and payments.
Nokia E5 supports the Active Notes application, which allows you to add not only text, but also various graphics, videos, and business cards to your notes.And such notes can be saved in XHTML format, which allows you to view it using an Internet browser and, of course, it is possible to send a note in the form of SMS, MMS or Bluetooth. Such a note can be tied to a contact and when you call it, all the information will be visible.
The multimedia capabilities of Nokia E5 are characterized by good sound, much higher than that of other modern smartphones. The operating time with the use of multimedia capabilities reaches 30 hours (already mentioned earlier). Sound settings are regulated by an eight-band equalizer, there are five presets and an unlimited number of user settings. Balance, stereo sound and low frequencies are also regulated. There are three options for visualization of the player to choose from. As a result, it should be said that the player's capabilities in a company with sound quality will undoubtedly delight the user.
Gps.
The smartphone has a built-in GPS, the application of the third version of Ovi Maps is traditionally present in addition to voice navigation, which is important free. Maps are stored on your phone's memory card. The accuracy is as accurate as possible, both road and pedestrian roads with paths in parks are shown.
Camera.
The Nokia E5 has a 5-megapixel camera with flash without autofocus. This is the first Nokia to have a camera smaller than 8MP without using autofocus. The positive side of this decision is that the background in the photo is better. But at a distance of 50 cm, the quality of the photo is not encouraging. The horizontally oriented interface is used constantly. There are practically no differences from the parameters of Nokia E72, only a new panoramic shooting mode is available.
Photo settings:
- transition to video mode;
- selection of one of the modes (landscape, custom mode, portrait, macro mode, night portrait, night, auto mode);
- control of flash parameters (on / off, automatic, red-eye removal);
- postponement of shooting (2, 10, 20 seconds);
- burst modes (shooting a frame every 10, 30 seconds, 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes);
- exposure compensation (from -2.0 to 2.0);
- white balance (sunny, auto, fluorescent, incandescent);
- special effects (sepia, black and white, negative).
Conclusions.
Nokia E5 almost completely repeats the functionality of the E72. Matches in platform version, processor parameters, screen size, communication set. The updated Symbian operating system allows you to run larger applications. The speed of reaction and work has slightly increased due to optimizations.
The appearance is simpler than that of fellow tribesmen. The candy bar works surprisingly long from a full battery charge, the mp-3 player sounds very good. Excellent build quality, well-fitting body parts. The keyboard also evokes only positive emotions.
The popularity of Nokia E5 is ensured by its practicality, decent appearance, a complete set of business applications, and all this for a relatively moderate price.
