Review of Nokia Asha 311 phone

Not so long ago, Nokia launched the Asha line of phones. The Asha 311 can be called the most interesting. Among the devices of the series, it has the most powerful hardware, therefore, the highest productivity. The touchphone is equipped with a 1 GHz processor, a capacitive display and an adapted Series 40 platform.

The cost of the Asha 311 model is slightly higher than that of its relatives in the line, however, its characteristics are also better. The device supports 3G, it has a wireless Wi-Fi module, a slot for microSD memory cards and a 3.2 megapixel camera. We should also mention the Gorilla Glass protective coating for the display.

By the way, for a similar price, you can also choose models based on the Symbian platform among Nokia phones. This, for example, C5-06 or 5230. Ordinary users have plenty to choose from. Most likely, the Asha 311 will enjoy the greatest popularity, since this is a new device, and it is advertised constantly now.

Our hero is available in three colors: gray, blue and pink. Case material - glossy plastic. Thanks to it, the device looks brighter than the Asha 305 or Asha 306. Unfortunately, fingerprints are very noticeable on the glossy surface. In order for the touchphone to have a presentable appearance, it will have to be wiped frequently. Many people may not like this. Be that as it may, the device has a very original design. It is designed for young, active users, for whom the appearance of the device plays an important role.

The touchphone boasts compact dimensions and low weight: 106x52x12.9 mm, 95 grams. The device is assembled with high quality. The back cover is tightly fixed on the body, it does not dangle or creak. It will not be difficult to remove it. It is enough to press on the cover and slide it down.

As mentioned above, the phone is almost completely glossy. Only in the lower part of it there is a small matte insert, separated from the rest of the case by a silver edging.

On the top edge of the case there is a microUSB port for synchronization with a computer. There is also a 2 mm charger jack and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the right side there are two keys: the upper one is for adjusting the volume, the lower one is for locking the display and turning off the device. Both buttons are moderately hard, so you can not be afraid of accidental pressing.

There is a strap holder on the left side of the device. The bottom edge is empty.

On the front side, above the large touchscreen, there is a slot for the earpiece, to the right of which there is a proximity sensor. There are two small bell buttons under the display. The developers have made them quite tall, so it won't be difficult to find the right button by touch.

At the top of the back of the phone is a square silver frame with rounded corners that houses the camera lens. Below, under the silver stripe, you can see the oblong slot of the loudspeaker.

Removing the back cover, we get access to the battery. There are two slots under it - for a SIM and a microSD memory card. As you already understood, hot swapping of a flash card is not supported, which sometimes creates some inconvenience in using the device.

The touchphone uses an inexpensive 3-inch TFT-matrix with a resolution of 240x400 pixels. It is capable of displaying up to 65,000 colors. The viewing angles of the screen are quite acceptable for an inexpensive phone. When viewed from the side, the colors are almost not inverted. The brightness of the matrix is high. On the street in sunny weather, it will be problematic to view photos or videos, but the interface elements remain more or less distinguishable and it will not be difficult to control the phone.

Capacitive type display sensor with high sensitivity. It is of higher quality than the Asha 306 or Asha 305. Another detail that puts the Asha 311 above its “relatives” in the lineup is the expensive Gorilla Glass, which protects the screen from scratches and damages.

The developers have made many changes to the Series 40 platform, thereby making it as touch-friendly as possible. The locked touchscreen displays a large clock, the current date and icons indicating missed calls, unread messages. To unlock the device, slide your finger across the screen from left to right.

The main desktop displays a battery indicator, a network signal indicator, a clock with a date, and an active user mode icon. There are also shortcuts of programs installed in the touchphone and shortcut icons, to which you can attach any number from the phone book. By the way, in the settings, the user can create a list of applications that will be displayed in the most prominent place on the desktop.

At the top of the screen there is a drop-down notification line, on which there are connection control buttons, volume control buttons and icons indicating a missed call or unread message.

The phone has three desktops that you can switch between. The first, fully customizable, contains icons for apps, contacts, and so on. The second table is the phone's menu, the third is the calls menu. On any of the tables, you can change the wallpaper, there are several themes.

Phone book

It is designed for 2000 records. There is a function to search for a subscriber by name, the field for entering it is located at the top of the screen. You cannot search for a contact by last name or phone number. The entries from the book can be copied to the SIM card. It is possible to customize the way contacts are displayed in the book (first name and last name or last name and first name) and select a data source (SIM, phone memory, both).

When creating a new entry in the book, you must fill in a number of standard fields: name, surname, birthday of the subscriber, phone number, email address, etc. By the way, the fields for the first and last name are designed for 50 characters, which is more than enough. A subscriber can be assigned a photo and a ringtone.

The call menu is located on one of the desktops. It can be accessed directly from the phone book. Keypad buttons for dialing are large, with large numbers. Unfortunately, when dialing a number, the screen does not display matching contacts from the phone book. But this function is found even on the cheapest phones.

All calls of different types (incoming, outgoing, missed) are collected in one general list, but each is marked for clarity with a corresponding colored icon. You can call or send SMS / MMS to the selected number. Also, any number from the list can be saved in the phone book. There is a function of recording telephone conversations.

Messages in the phone are displayed in a vertical list. The correspondence with each individual subscriber is combined into a dialogue. Messages can be archived and saved to a memory card. When sending SMS, the addressee's number is either entered manually or selected from the phone book. You can save the sender's number of an incoming message in your contacts list. When you add a picture, video or voice note to a message, it automatically turns into an MMS.

You can use one of the two keypads on your phone to type a message. The first is a virtual analogue of a standard telephone keypad, each button of which has several symbols. The second has a QWERTY layout and it is with it that it is easiest to type text. Since the display of the device is not that big, for some male users the buttons of this keyboard may seem small.

A special wizard is used to configure the mail client. It contains a small list of the most popular mail servers. To connect the mailbox, the user just needs to select the desired server and enter the username and password.

The application interface is quite simple. At the top of the screen there are buttons for additional functions of the mail client. Below is a list of incoming emails. For each letter, the sender's name, subject, date of receipt and an icon for the presence of attachments are indicated. Below the list at the bottom of the display there are four buttons: download letters, view folders, contact list, switch between accounts.

Thanks to a well-thought-out email client interface and a relatively large screen, Asha 311 is quite suitable for active correspondence. It is convenient to read incoming letters on the phone, and create and send new messages.

The device has a 3.2-megapixel photomodule without autofocus. You can shoot in both portrait and landscape mode, while the camera interface will automatically adjust to the orientation of the phone. During shooting, there are five buttons on the screen: settings, gallery, shutter button, switch between photo and video modes, camera close key.

The photo module is inexpensive, so the quality of the captured photos and videos is low. The maximum image resolution is 2048x1536 pixels, the maximum video resolution is 640x480 pixels (14 fps).

Mp3 player

The application has a traditional interface. During playback, the display shows the name of the song, the name of its artist, album cover. Of course, there are also control buttons with a rewind bar, next to which the duration of the musical composition is indicated. Unfortunately, the developers did not provide for player control when the screen is locked. The maximum that the user can in this situation is to adjust the playback volume using the keys on the end of the phone.

The player has an equalizer with four presets, you can change the playback mode, there is a repeat function. Playlists are supported, which can be created both on a computer and directly in a touchphone.

The Asha 311 has a high volume level and a decent sound quality. If you use high-quality headphones, the device can replace an inexpensive MP3 player.

FM radio

There is both manual and automatic station search. You can record radio broadcasts and save them in the phone memory. RDS supported. The receiver has a memory for 20 radio stations. You can even listen to internet radio on the Asha 311. For this, a separate program is installed in the device.

The gallery can work in both landscape and portrait orientations. Pictures on the display are displayed as small previews arranged in a 3x5 grid. Selected images can be transferred via Bluetooth, sent via MMS or Email, and uploaded to social networks. All file operations are supported: delete, copy, move, rename.

Drawing preview pictures and scrolling in the gallery works without delays and twitching. The scaling of the open image is also fast, without any slowdowns.

There are separate sections in the gallery for videos and photos taken with a touchphone camera. By the way, the device can play video files in AVI format, but the image quality will be low, since the device's screen has a low resolution.

The calendar has traditional features. The user can set the day of the beginning of the week, view all the scheduled events for a specific date. When adding a new event to the calendar, it is necessary to select one of six possible types of it, configure the notification melody, and set the period for its repetition.

There is only one alarm clock in the tachfon. It has standard settings. The alarm time is set. Any music file from the phone's memory or a flash card can be used as a ringtone. The radio can also turn on if headphones are connected to the touchphone.

Asha 311 has a simple social client. networks Facebook and Twitter. Thanks to him, you will be able to send messages to friends and read their replies, view message feeds.

There is a calculator, timer, network traffic counter. A special program is installed to read RSS feeds.

With the voice recorder, you can create recordings by storing them in the phone memory or on a memory card. The maximum recording duration is 1 hour.

In the Nokia Store, you will find all sorts of applications, games, and other multimedia and entertainment content. To use the content of the store, you first need to register or log in with your account. The most popular paid software is displayed in a separate list. There are, of course, a large number of free programs as well. By the way, if you are the owner of Asha 311, you can download as many as 50 games from the store for free, which are paid for owners of other phones.

The device has 4 profiles that the user can customize to his liking. They change the ringtone and message signal, its volume, etc. The peculiarity of the profiles is that they can be changed automatically at the appointed time.

The built-in application opens even the most "weighty" sites without any problems. Due to the small diagonal of the display, Asha 311 is hardly suitable for frequent Internet surfing. Although you can periodically look at your VKontatka page or read news sites without any problems.

Web pages are automatically sized to fit the touchscreen. Zooming is slow, sometimes with noticeable jerks. The user can add an open page to bookmarks, set the font size, change other parameters. The browser has many settings.

The touchphone supports two main navigation functions - determining the current location and laying a route. Maps can be scaled with volume keys or multi-touch gestures. Having laid the route, the map will show the main places on it, for example, turning points.

The navigation application works similarly to Google Maps or Yandex.Maps, that is, maps are loaded onto the device as needed. Unfortunately, the phone does not store them in the cache, and the navigator will reload the same maps with each subsequent launch.

The device supports GSM and 3G networks. There is a Bluetooth 2.1 module, thanks to which you can connect a wireless headset or headphones to the phone. There is a Wi-Fi module. You can use VoIP Internet telephony on your device. To connect to a computer, the Asha 311 has a microUSB port. There is no data cable included, so you have to buy it separately.

Memory, file browser

The developers have installed only 120 MB of memory in the device. Fortunately, flash cards up to 32GB are supported.

The file manager supports all file operations: rename, delete, copy and move. You can also create, delete and rename folders, and sort their contents in four ways: by file name, format, size or creation date.

Autonomous work

The replaceable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1110 mAh, according to the manufacturer, is capable of providing up to 696/14 hours of standby / talk time. Under average loads, the battery life is 2 - 3 days. If you talk on the phone for up to half an hour a day, listen to the player for a couple of hours and occasionally take pictures, the Asha 311 will work without recharging for three days. At maximum load (frequent calls, Internet surfing, navigation), the battery of the device can be discharged in a day.

The volume of the ringer loudspeaker, as well as the volume of the spoken one, is very high. The vibration alert also boasts a lot of power.

Asha 311 looks much better than its younger brothers - models Asha 305 and 306. Our hero has more productive hardware, a much better screen sensor. The Gorilla Glass coating installed here is not often found on inexpensive touchphones. Many users will love the little things like internet radio and internet telephony support. Do not forget about the presence of a Wi-Fi module. The touchphone has everything you need on board, it is easy to use and looks nice. The Asha 311 is definitely worth the money.

Of the noticeable shortcomings of the model, we can only recall the low speed of scaling pages in the browser and the lack of multitasking.

In terms of cost, the Asha 311 has a lot of competitors. You can easily find both regular phones with similar functionality and inexpensive smartphones running Android, for example, LG Optimus L3.
