HOW TO SHARP SKATES - how to sharpen skates yourself at home

To sharpen skates at home, you need a hand or power tool. If you do not ride often, you can completely get by with a file mounted on a wooden block. And for regulars of the skating rink it is easier to use a grinder or a drill.

How to determine if skates are sharpened

Look at the cross section of the blade. The blunt ones are in the shape of the letter "P" (no depression), the sharp ones are in the shape of the letter "M" (with a depression).

You will need:

  • vice;
  • round file of the corresponding diameter;
  • a wooden block with a longitudinal hole along the width of the blade. It must have a U-shaped shape, in the groove of which the file is attached;
  • sandpaper - for finishing.

When you secure the skate in a vise, "go" sandpaper along the blade to clean it of rust. Sharpening skates will become easier.

  • Place the block with the file into the tip of the blade. With a confident movement towards you, outline the contours of the gutter.
  • Determine the groove depth visually. With pressure on the block and forward and backward movements, make a depression of the desired size.
  • Finish by sanding the skid to remove any burrs from the metal.

The degree of sliding depends on the radius of the gutter. The deeper the groove, the better the runners grip the ice, the skates are more maneuverable and stable. Hockey sharpeners with a radius of 8-15 mm, curly ones deeper - 15-20 mm.

How to sharpen skates at home with a grinder or drill

Install a grinding wheel on a fixed grinder or drill. Its thickness should be 1 mm less than the thickness of the grooved recess (groove) in the runner. Fix the skate and sharpen the blade from toe to heel.

If you sharpen yourself, you will not achieve the exact radius of the chute, and even more so you will not make a z-groove or FBV. To sharpen skates correctly, bring them to the master.
