HOW TO DRAIN WATER FROM A BOILER - how to descale a boiler

Important

We do not recommend cleaning the boiler yourself if the product is under warranty. If necessary, contact the service center, where specialists will competently perform the necessary work. This article is for those whose boilers are NOT under warranty.

  1. Open the hot water tap on the mixer, this is necessary to relieve pressure inside the tank;
  2. Open the tap on the hot water connection pipe to the boiler so that air can enter the tank;
  3. Open the tap for draining water from the water heater, after connecting the drain hose;
  4. After draining, check if all liquid has been removed.

If you turn on the hot water tap and turn off the supply to the house, you will still not be able to drain the water from the boiler. Hot water is drawn from the top of the tank, where it rises heated by convection.

  • To drain the water into the tank, you need to run air through the hot water supply (DHW) pipe.
  • Disconnect the unit from the power supply for safety.
  • Shut off the cold water supply to the water heater.
  • Open only a hot water tap to drain off any residues. Thus, release the pressure.
  • Unscrew the fastening of the flag (lever) on the safety valve at the boiler inlet.

  • Open the lever. Water will flow from the safety valve, and air will be “sucked in” into the mixer with hot water (hear a gurgle in the tap). If the drain is not connected to the sewer, substitute a bucket. After filling it, close the tap, pour out the water and repeat. If the pressure is not enough to "displace" the water, there are only two ways out:
  1. Disassemble flexible hose connections, metal-plastic or American fittings.
  2. If they are not disassembled, put a rubber hose on the spout of the nearest tap in the unit and blow with all your lungs so that the water from the hot water supply gets into the boiler.
  • When the water is drained, close the shut-off valve.

Important: no matter how you drain the water from the water heater, up to two buckets will still remain in a stlitre tank. Because the cold water pipe is raised above the bottom of the tank so that the heating element is constantly in the water. Drain the remaining water from the boiler when unscrew the heater.

How to clean a boiler

Only by disassembling, you can clean the water heating tank. Even if an anti-scale filter is provided in the unit, into the flask of which citric acid can be poured, do not expect a proper result.

  • From reaction with acid, scale settles to the bottom. When flushing, a little suspension will come out, because at the bottom of the container there is no liquid movement of sufficient force.
  • Due to the compacted layer, the lower part of the tank will heat up more, "eating" more electricity, and it will take longer than usual to heat the water.

How to clean a boiler at home with your own hands.

  • Disconnect the heater from the mains and remove the screws that hold the decorative cover.
  • Below it is a thermostat with power cables and a signal lamp. Disconnect the light bulb contacts and the power cable wires.
  • Remember (photograph) the connection diagram of the water heater.
    • Usually the brown wire is connected to the phase, the blue one to zero.
    • Yellow and green are used for grounding, they are connected to the tank body.
  • Shut off the water inlet / outlet of the water heater. Now carefully pull the thermostat out of the heater tube housing. Place a container under the boiler to prevent any residual water from spilling onto the floor.
  • Unscrew the heating element slowly with the key. Take your time to pull it out, let the water drain off with pieces of scale.
  • Gently, so as not to break, remove the heater with smooth movements to the left / right.
  • Clean out deposits and rinse the boiler with running water.

How to descale heating elements

Remove the layers of layers with a knife. Chip off only those that flake off.

To heighten the effect, prepare a cleaning solution:

  • cut off the neck of a 2 liter plastic bottle and fill with warm water;
  • dissolve two sachets of citric acid in it and immerse the part in the solution;
  • leave overnight to dissolve the scale.

Timely change the magnesium anode, which is located next to the heating element. It reduces scale build-up on the heater and protects the tank walls from rust.

Now you can assemble the boiler. When it's done, check the tightness of the heating element installation.

  • Slowly open the inlet / outlet water heater taps. When water flows from the "hot" mixer, the tank is full.
  • If the boiler does not leak, connect the power cable to the thermostat. Connect the wires and screw on the decorative cover.
  • Connect the electricity to the water heater. Wait for the water to heat up.
