Air rifles: how to choose the right air rifle and which one, the choice of air guns for hunting

There are two main criteria to look at when choosing and comparing an air rifle:

  • accuracy;
  • power.

Its design cannot perfectly combine two indicators at the same time, so look for a middle ground. Agree, there is no point in a powerful air gun if it does not hit the target.

The maximum indicator of the energy of the bullet ejection from air vents is 7-7.5 J. The power depends on the weight of the bullet (about 50 mg), which gives it an initial velocity of up to 340 meters per second. Before choosing the right air rifle, pay attention to the accuracy of fire. If the spread does not exceed one centimeter at a distance of up to 50 meters, this is an excellent air rifle.

How to choose an air rifle

To determine the choice of an air rifle, pay attention to the types of air guns that depend on the mechanism for ejecting a bullet from the barrel:

  • Spring-piston pneumatics (SPP) is the simplest and most famous mechanism where rifles shoot single shots and after each shot it is required to break the barrel in order to charge a bullet or ball. Benefits: reliable, simple, cheap, ideal for beginners. disadvantages: optical sights quickly deteriorate;
  • The multi-compression mechanism is an excellent air rifle with a low rate of fire. Benefits: Recoil after firing is minimized. The power of the shot depends on the pumping - the gun is suitable for hunting small game. disadvantages: after each charge, it is necessary to pump air in it for a shot;
  • gas cylinder mechanism - a gun powered by special cylinders with compressed carbon dioxide (CO2). Provides up to 80-100 shots from one can. Benefits: low firing power is compensated by the multiple loading of the gun. disadvantages: the only way to use is recreational shooting;
  • with pre-pumping pressure (PCP) is a combination of a compression mechanism with a gas cylinder system, making it ideal for hunting. Benefits: high degree of precision and power, low recoil and noiselessness. disadvantages: high price.

Choosing an air rifle for hunting

Don't buy an air gun without knowing how you will use it. Decide whether it is necessary for hunting or for entertainment (target shooting).

The butt material affects the comfort during the hunting period:

  • plastic, when handled well, lasts longer and is cheaper than wood;
  • the tree has a pleasant appearance, aesthetics and resemblance to a real hunting rifle. The hand does not freeze if you shoot in cold weather. There is no feeling of an empty body like in plastic.

Does an air rifle need a telescopic sight and a silencer?

The design of the gun determines the recoil when fired - the more recoil, the faster the telescopic sight will wear out. A silencer for hunting will do a good service - it will not frighten off a fur-bearing animal or bird when fired. If you intend to install a silencer, choose the right air rifle with a special thread on the barrel.
