WHAT TO TAKE ON A HIKE - what to take on an overnight hike, a list of things

Most of us don't realize to what extent a backpack can be lightened. It seems that the limit of weight reduction is some measly 2-3 kilograms, for the sake of which it is not worth "sweating". But it is not so.

Start your transformation with the Big Three gear: backpack, sleeping bag and tent. Pay attention to their volume, and only then to their weight.

  • Backpack

    First, get rid of a large 50-80 liter backpack. It gets into a lot of things from the category "may come in handy" or "where am I without it." Take a closer look at backpacks with a volume of 35-49 liters. For nature with an overnight stay, we recommend durable models (GRANITE GEAR Sonju 35, Highlander Rambler, Defcon 5 Mission 35) with excellent organization of the interior space and a comfortable back. They are practical:

    • quick access to the laptop and tablet compartment saves time;
    • side compression straps and detachable waistband for added comfort;
    • the internal compartments and organizer pockets will accommodate everything you need - including a jacket, raincoat, etc.
  • Sleeping bag

    A sleeping bag on padding polyester, made of microfiber or holofiber is lighter than a winter one on duck or goose down. In addition, the downy ones are bulky, they cannot be folded compactly. In order not to get cold, it is better to wear a warm sweater and pants. Sleep in them.

  • Tent

    Unpack the tent from the cover and give the frame (s), top tent, bottom, and stakes to the different people you go camping with. Thus, you will significantly lighten your luggage and save space in your backpack.

    • Can be attached to the frame section from the side.
    • Fold the awning or sleeping bag to the bottom or back of the backpack.
    • The tent cover can serve as an additional bag for carrying your belongings.

If, according to the reports of the hydrometeorological center, rain is not planned during the period of your trip, the tent can not be stretched. Just tie the guy wires to rocks or trees nearby and your hideout is ready.

It is worth purchasing a lightweight tent weighing 1-1.5 kg. For example, TIME ECO Minilite-2 or TRAMP Sputnik. These two-person tents only weigh up to one kg! Or buy one that allows you to use the top or inner awning separately. They can be covered over a sleeping bag while sleeping in the open air. This shelter will protect you from dew.

If you need to quickly fold your wet tent, wipe it off with a towel, T-shirt, or paper. This will lighten the weight of the tent and reduce the chance of ruining the fabric.

List of things for the hike

You can also gain additional volume and comfort on things and accessories.

Things for the hike: the essentials.

  • Compact travel mat: we recommend a self-inflating mat. You will sleep on it like at home. It is soft but durable. Will not tear even if caught on a branch.
  • Trekking Poles - Distributes the tension from walking to the legs and arms. Thus, they facilitate descents, ascents and long transitions.
  • Membrane jacket: It is waterproof, windproof, water repellent, and breathable. Plus, it's lightweight and compact. We recommend models with taped seams.
  • Trekking thermal socks.
  • Thermal T-shirt: It keeps you warm when it's cool and doesn't float when it's hot.
  • Rain cover.
  • Tourist burner - to save time on preparing dinner and stretch out pleasant coffee gatherings. It takes much more time, effort and nerves to cook food on a fire. Especially if the wood is damp.
