What is a binder for and how to choose the right stitching machine?

Modern devices and various devices greatly facilitate the daily work with documents and papers for employees of offices, banks and various companies. It is hard to imagine how one person can cope with the task of manually punching and binding hundreds, and maybe thousands of sheets, achieving a presentable result and spending a minimum amount of time on all this. Difficult, but rather even unrealistic, right? All this is very easy to fix and even a chubby brochure will be ready in a couple of minutes if there is a miracle of technology in the office - a binder.

Binder is an office equipment, the purpose of which is the operational binding of documents. The booklet maker will help you easily, quickly and efficiently stitch various documents, accounting reports, theses, product catalogs and calendars. The resulting brochure is quite modern and attractive in appearance, as well as easy to use.

Classification of binders by binding type:

- on a metal spring;

- on a plastic spring;

- devices of the combined type (they work with both metal and plastic springs);

- thermal binders.

Binding of documents using thread is made by special sewing machines. The stapler performs the binding by fixing the metal staples. Unlike these types of paper binding, spring binding tends to unfold well. An even greater advantage of spring binding is the ability to add or remove pages from an existing document. Despite such manipulations, the binding is not damaged.

Modern binders use combs rather than springs. Thanks to this shape, the binding is carried out with just one movement, provided that the thickness of the block does not exceed the maximum width of the punch.

The principle of operation of the binder is as follows: first, the holes of the document sheets are punched, that is, perforation, and then the sheets are fastened using a suitable spring size. Depending on the material of the spring with which the binder works, some advantages and disadvantages of such work come out.

The most common and economic type of binding is on a plastic spring. This method of joining sheets is suitable for materials with a volume of less than 500 sheets, for example, for advertising brochures or for price lists.

Plastic springs-combs are quite elastic, this characteristic is convenient in that there is no need to pull out the sheets, they can simply be carefully removed from any place by opening the spring for this. Similarly, you can insert a sheet anywhere in the finished document. The disadvantage of plastic spring binding is that the document cannot be opened 360 degrees.

Metal spring binding is a very reliable and convenient professional binding. Unlike plastic fastening, a metal spring cannot be opened, but such a binding is much stronger. The metallic look of the binding ensures excellent quality of the resulting document. The area in which it can be applied is all kinds of notebooks, calendars, catalogs and notebooks.

The disadvantages include high cost, inability to reuse consumables and a very low limitation of the number of bound sheets (up to 120-130 pieces).

Thermal binding is used to bond textbooks, brochures and scientific papers.

The principle of work of thermal binding binders:

A special folder heats up in the binder, in which you need to put the document.The spine of the folder is impregnated with glue, it softens when heated and connects the sheets of the document. After the binding has cooled down, you can use this brochure. In expensive models of the glue machine, there is a built-in cooling element. The maximum volume of materials and documents with this type of binding can reach 600-700 sheets, and the quality of brochures is close to typographic performance, since it is impossible to reuse consumables and document pages.

The binder body is made of plastic, metal or combined. The advantage of binders with a plastic body is their low weight and low cost. These models of booklet makers are designed to work with a small volume of materials, which should not exceed 150 sheets.

The combined binder case is a plastic binder case combined with a metal frame. These binder models are designed to work with a large volume of materials and documents.

For everyday work, binders with a metal case are designed, they are quite comfortable and reliable. The disadvantages of these models of booklet makers are their high weight and high price.

The main characteristics that you should pay attention to when buying a binder:

- punching power, that is, the maximum allowable number of punched sheets at a time;

- the maximum number of sheets in a brochure (binding thickness);

- the presence of a function for adjusting the depth of perforation, that is, the distance of the offset of the holes from the edge. This characteristic is important for binding thick brochures.

- the ability to adjust the opening of the spring;

- the ability to turn off the knives. This function is used for bindings of A5, A6 or non-standard sizes of materials.

- for large volumes of bound products, it is better to choose such a binder model, in which the binding handle is two independent handles. One of them is for binding, and the other is for perforation. The presence of two handles improves productivity and saves time.

Using these tips when buying a binder, you will choose the right model. The range of stitching machines can be viewed here.
