What is a dummy and the history of their appearance

Almost every toddler loves to suck on a pacifier, as sucking is the dominant reflex in infants. The dummy is able to calm and lull the child.

Do you know who first invented the pacifier and when?

The world's first pacifier-pacifier appeared relatively recently, namely, at the end of the 19th - at the beginning of the 20th century, it was invented by Lamprecht AG. The rubber pacifier was very similar to a modern pacifier, to which was attached a ring that made it comfortable to hold in the hands, or could be tied to a string. The ring guaranteed a kind of safety for the pacifier - the child could not swallow it.

A pacifier is a surrogate for a mother's breast for a baby. The history of its appearance takes its roots in those ancient times, when people were constantly fighting for survival, looking for food and shelter from predatory animals. Then mothers took care of their miracle not in the way that modern women do, who every minute worry about the health and safety of their baby.

Children were sick, crying, hungry and capricious at all times, therefore, in order to distract or calm the baby, women succeeded in tricks and used, in addition to their breasts, various improvised means.

As a dummy, people used animal skin in ancient times. The first nipples were of various shapes and were made of metal, clay or stone, evidence of these facts is evidenced by archaeological excavations. Later, the breast had to be replaced with a piece of soaked bread, which was wrapped in cloth or just a piece of cloth dipped in honey. Using all these items, the baby was in danger, as he could swallow and choke on such a dummy.

Until the 18th century, in the Middle Ages, mothers used a sponge instead of a nipple, which was sweetened with wormwood tincture, from which the baby quickly fell asleep. Our great-grandmothers did not act very prudently before, they used poppy buds as a dummy, not knowing that the milk of this plant contains opium.

Fortunately, we live in a civilized world, and there is no need to return to those ancient methods.

Today, there are many different models of pacifiers on sale: latex, rubber, with and without patterns, and there are also many accessories for pacifiers: caps, chains, etc.

Among pediatricians and mothers, there are discussions about what is a dummy for a baby - harm or benefit? And here opinions differ ...

So, let's figure out when the need for a nipple for a baby arises.

The pacifier is a silicone or rubber pacifier without holes, which is seated on a ring made of plastic. Even with active sucking on the pacifier, it will not go entirely into the child's mouth, since this is hindered by the ring.

Sucking on a pacifier prevents your baby from sucking on its fingers or foreign objects (toys, a corner of a blanket or diaper), and it also relieves colic pain.

In the history of the pacifier, there were times when doctors recommended using it and, conversely, prohibited it. A pacifier was prescribed so that the children could satisfy their sucking reflexes. But at the beginning of the twentieth century, the nipple was abandoned due to the fact that it contributed to the formation of an incorrect bite and allegedly did not comply with the principles of hygiene. After some time, the use of a pacifier began to be approved again, only to use it without fanaticism.

Experienced pediatricians draw the attention of parents to the fact that a pacifier has such an unpleasant moment as addictive, so sometimes it is very difficult to wean children from using this object. However, such cases do not occur often, most children of one year old are already gradually abandoning pacifiers.

Parents who have a negative attitude towards pacifiers are advised not to give it to the baby and thereby not spoil their nerves. Parental dissatisfaction is bad for the baby, so do not teach your baby to the papilla.

If you have nothing against the use of pacifiers, and all people close to you unanimously begin to protest against pacifiers, then do not follow their lead. You should explain to your relatives that the final word is yours, whether to give the baby a dummy or not.

If you are able to offer your child a dummy in time, then he will not start sucking his fingers, and some children begin to do this from the first days of life. Be guided by the behavior of your child, he himself will tell you when he wants a dummy.

As soon as the baby falls asleep, carefully remove the pacifier from his mouth, you should not teach the baby to sleep with a pacifier in his mouth, as he will constantly wake up if the papilla accidentally falls out.

It is necessary to wean from sucking a pacifier gradually, since this habit cannot disappear instantly, it will take several weeks. Remember one more important rule: never force a baby to suck a pacifier!

When going out for a walk, you should always have a few spare pacifiers, as the nipple can be damaged or lost, and this will be very upsetting for the baby.

Before using the pacifier, be sure to check its condition for holes. Always buy pacifiers based on your child's age. A large nipple will cause gag reflexes and regurgitation in babies, it is better for them to buy a short pacifier.
