Notebook

The compact F8S laptop is one of the first ASUS laptops built on the revolutionary Intel Santa Rosa platform. The computer has an impressive glossy surface and high performance.

APPEARANCE

The laptop is made of traditional plastic, its appearance is original due to the glossy surface with a relief pattern (using the new ASUS Infusion technology). The glossy coating itself is usually quite easily soiled, but in this case the embossed surface makes the prints less noticeable. And yet, the user will sometimes have to wipe it down with a special napkin in order for it to retain its glossy shine. The keyboard is standard for laptops with a 14-inch screen. The keys are large enough, they are quite convenient to use in work. When typing this review on ASUS F8S, we made only a few mistakes, mostly due to the fact that the hands touched the Touch Pad, which is located very close to the keys. Connecting a Logitech VX Nano wireless mouse to the device allowed us to disable the touchpad and make our work even more convenient. The USB receiver of this mouse is so tiny that it practically does not protrude beyond the surface of the laptop case, and it is not at all necessary to remove it during transportation. Between the keys of the touchpad is a biometric fingerprint scanner, which is now equipped with the vast majority of business-class gadgets. This helps protect the machine from unauthorized access. When the security mode is active, to start working with the laptop, you will have to log in by placing your finger on the sensor. The display in the ASUS F8S is commendable. The 14-inch matrix, made with the use of Color Shine technologies and ASUS Splendid Video Intelligence, provides sufficient brightness and richness of shades from almost any viewing angle. Above the screen is a 1.3-megapixel web-camera with the ability to change the tilt angle.

EQUIPMENT

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and comes with 2GB of RAM expandable up to 4GB. The new product uses a video card NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS (256 MB), which gives the device excellent multimedia and gaming capabilities. The equipment of ASUS F8S can be considered quite modern. It is equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 technology and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g. The manufacturer has provided as many as 5 USB ports, a slot for Express-cards, VGA-Out; TV-Out (S-Video), as well as a card reader with support for 8 main types of memory cards. At the same time, all communication ports are located quite ergonomically. In particular, we managed to work comfortably by connecting a flash drive, a LAN cable, a charger, as well as a USB printer, a camera and a Logitech VX Nano wireless mouse mini-receiver to the laptop. Even so many peripherals did not give us any inconvenience when working. A few words about the autonomy of the laptop. The mark of 2.3 hours declared by the manufacturer and measured by us practically coincided during office work. As for playing games and watching videos, in this case, the operating time is reduced to about an hour and a half. However, with such a powerful processor and video card, this is quite a decent indicator.

PERFORMANCE

Considering the modern processor, large amount of RAM and powerful graphics card, no one doubted that ASUS F8S will demonstrate excellent performance with office applications and graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw.Several hours spent playing Unreal Tournament and Age of Empires III showed that this gadget copes well with any modern game, even with the most resource-intensive ones. The graphics and detail level of 3D objects has been set to maximum. Only in Age of Empires, at moments when the maximum number of playable characters was not on display, did we notice a barely noticeable system slowdown. At the same time, the laptop has a solid reserve of power "for the future" in the form of an additional slot for RAM, which is expandable up to 4 GB.

RESULTS

ASUS F8S undoubtedly deserves a positive assessment. The manufacturer has created another high-performance laptop in a compact case, which is perfect for both work and multimedia tasks. And thanks to the built-in high power potential, ASUS F8 is able to compete on equal terms even with the most modern gaming machines.
