Review ACER ASPIRE 5755G Notebook

Laptops from the Aspire series have always been equipped with powerful processors, allowed to view video on high-quality displays, and offered extensive connectivity. The fact that after a while the manufacturer has not changed direction is undoubtedly encouraging, and we can still work with elegant and at the same time powerful devices.

In our today's review, we will get to know the laptop Acer Aspire 5755G... It is highly productive and can be demanded by a variety of user audiences. Potential buyers of this laptop can be both office workers and entertainment lovers.

Contents of delivery

The device came to us for testing in a small box. Inside we found the Acer 5755G itself, a power supply weighing 500 grams, wires, a battery and a package of necessary documentation, which was presented by a quick user's guide, a booklet with instructions for quick start, a list of addresses of Acer offices in various countries. An installation disc was also included in the package. There was a thin napkin under the lid of the laptop, protecting the display from contact with the keyboard.

Design

The Acer Aspire 5755G belongs to a design series called "Gorgeous by Nature". It comes in a variety of color options: Pacific Blue, Amazon Green, Sunset Red, Desert Brown, and Monsoon Black. A model in black has arrived in our test lab. At first, it seems that there is nothing superfluous in the design of the laptop, because outwardly everything looks quite simple: rounded corners, a streamlined body. But let's take a closer look at everything.

After a closer inspection, you begin to realize that the laptop has a fairly attractive appearance. The very first thing that catches the eye is how matte and glossy surfaces are combined here. The laptop lid is glossy. At first, it seems that there is no drawing at all. But it is not so. In fact, the entire outer surface over the entire area is covered with longitudinal thin stripes. They have a wavy shape and look quite original. By the way, if you look closely, you can see fine grain on the surface of the lid. In general, based on all these additions, it can be concluded that the design is not boring. Moreover, the chrome-plated Acer logo located in the center of the lid will look great against the black lacquered surface of the laptop.

If you look at the glossy surface from the point of view of practicality, the impressions are somewhat different. Undoubtedly, the gloss looks very nice, but it is too easily soiled. Each touch of the shiny surface will leave a large number of fingerprints. Thus, the owner will have to be patient and arm themselves with a cloth to wipe the lid frequently.

With regard to the interior surfaces, it can be said that there are no dark and shiny surfaces. The pad is gray and the keyboard buttons are black, all with a matte finish. But the frame framing the display turned out to be completely varnished. A lot of prints will remain on the glossy coating, so the frame, as well as the lid, will have to be wiped very often.

Examining the bottom, you can see that there are four rubberized legs on it. They are all oval in shape, but vary in size. But be that as it may, the legs will securely hold the laptop on a flat surface, not allowing it to slide on the table surface. We want to add that the bottom panel has a compartment, so you can easily get to the internal components.

The Acer Aspire 5755G laptop has the same build quality as most similar devices. During operation, we noticed noticeable flexes in the area of the lid, and in the area of the keyboard unit, they are less noticeable. The bottom itself is made of fairly durable plastic and, accordingly, practically does not bend. There is no backlash, all the parts fit together quite tightly. The hinges that connect the display to the base do not seem to be very secure, although in reality they clearly lock the screen and thus prevent it from wobbling. Note that you can open the laptop to a maximum angle of 150 degrees, which in turn will allow you to work comfortably with it, even while lying on the sofa.

Display and sound

The laptop Acer Aspire 5755G is equipped with a raster 15.6-inch display AU Optronics, its resolution is 1366x768 pixels. This widescreen screen is made using the proprietary CrystalBrite technology and has a theatrical aspect ratio of 16: 9. Due to the fact that the screen has a glossy surface, while watching video content or reading, the image will be saturated and the characters are quite clear. In addition, its area is quite enough to work with two simultaneously opened applications. The only thing you need to get used to is the reflections that invariably appear while working on the street. Although the manufacturer has provided for everything here, because the display is covered with a thin anti-reflective gel coating. This solution reduces motion blur and minimizes light scattering.

In addition, the screen has good viewing angles and a good level of brightness, but the contrast is average. Although, when working with documents and while watching a video, this is not very noticeable.

A miniature Acer Crystal Eye webcam is built into the display frame. Its maximum resolution is 1.3 megapixels. With this camera, you can easily take photos, record a video. Also, the user can take part in a video conference or chat with friends and colleagues on Skype.

Laptop acoustics Acer Aspire 5755G proprietary sound technology Dolby Advanced Audio is supported. Thanks to this function, 16-bit stereo sound is output through the headphones, which is completely free of distortion. True, in this sound, the predominance of high frequencies will be felt, and the bass, on the contrary, will be less pronounced. Note that while listening to music, we were surprised by the low volume level, it is enough only for sounding a small room, and even then, provided there is no interference from the outside. One can only guess why this is so, because the speakers are installed above the keyboard from above, and not on the bottom.

Keyboard and touchpad

The Aspire 5755G's work surface is adorned with a full-size, highly responsive 103-key keyboard. There is also a separate digital block. The character keys are square and approximately 15 mm in size. With such a keyboard, it is quite comfortable to type texts for a long time, since the buttons have an average travel, and when you press them, you feel a light and clear recoil. But, unfortunately, not all buttons can boast of optimal sizes. The keys included in the arrow block are too small, and this, in turn, will not allow to exclude erroneous pressing. For example, the [ё] button is generally half the size. It only saves that it is rarely used. In principle, if you feel uncomfortable when operating the arrow block, you can use the similar control buttons on the numpad. By the way, it is quite large, has 17 keys in the equipment and will be an excellent assistant when working with a large number of numbers.

Continuing the topic, we want to say that this keyboard is built on an island principle, respectively, its buttons are at a certain distance from each other. In addition, the buttons have a smooth matte surface with clearly visible markings. The keyboard has a standard layout, which is very good for ergonomics. Summing up, we want to note that this keyboard is very convenient because typing is quite comfortable, even if you have been doing it for a long time.

You won't see any special buttons above the keyboard block. Only on the left side is the power button.

The laptop is equipped with a small touchpad, but it is comfortable to use. The touch pad is slightly recessed into the body and, moreover, has a clear outline, respectively, using the touchpad blindly, you will always immediately find its location. When checked, it turned out to be quite sensitive. Positioning was convenient, because the touch area responded instantly to touch. By the way, due to the fact that the surface of the touchpad is smooth, fingers slide over it without delay. We would like to note that a special marking is applied to the manipulator area, intended for vertical scrolling. In addition to scrolling, the touchpad supports multi-touch gestures. Thus, the user can scale images, rotate images.

Below the touchpad is one solid mouse button. It is pressed a little hard, but at the same time a clear recoil is felt. In general, this rocker key is quite convenient to work with, while it is better to press it not in the middle, but along the edges.

Processor and performance

The laptop comes with a pre-installed Linux operating system. This OS will provide the user with stable work, easy management and access to various applications.

The Acer Aspire 5755G is based on the high-performance second generation Intel Core i5-2430M processor. The clock speed of this CPU is 2.4 GHz, and the cache of the third level is 3 MB. This dual-core processor is still a novelty, but has already managed to declare itself as a powerful device that can cope with resource-intensive applications. This CPU is built on the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture and has support for Turbo Boost self-overclocking technology, with the help of which its nominal frequency can be increased up to 3 GHz. In addition, using Hyper-Threading Technology, the processor can process four data streams simultaneously, thereby improving system performance.

The CPU is complemented by a RAM bar. This laptop has two slots. One of them contains a Kingston DDR3-1333 bar with a volume of 4 GB, and the other is free. Those who do not have enough 4 GB of RAM can add another one of the same bar, thus, the amount of RAM will increase to 8 GB.

Graphics are rendered using a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card. It uses its own 2GB video memory and is built using a 40nm process technology. This graphic controller is fast enough, which means that it can solve graphic tasks of varying degrees of complexity without any problems. For example, you can use a video card to encode and decode dual-stream video.

In addition to a discrete video card, the laptop also has a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000 video chip. It is excellent for working with office programs and applications, and you can also edit photos with it. If you need to use a discrete controller, then using NVIDIA Optimus technology, it is possible to automatically switch from one video card to another.

Now, let's take a look at the gaming capabilities of both video cards. Let's start with integrated. In this case, as we expected, games of 2009-2010 were played with the optimal number of frames per second, with low settings used, and the minimum resolution was 800x600 pixels. For example, StarCraft 2 ran between 68 and 75 fps, while Resident Evil 5 played back at 40-43 frames per second. Based on this data, it becomes clear that in modern games it is better to use a more powerful video card. Then we moved on to a discrete graphics card and tested it with such modern games as: Human Revolution, Mafia2, Crysis2 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. During playback, the maximum settings were set and the native resolution of 1366x768 pixels was left. The results were very good, especially Need for Speed, its frame rate ranged from 45 to 50. In other games, the indicators were lower: Deus Ex - from 24 to 28 fps, Crysis2 - 28-36 fps, Mafia2 - 32-40 frames per second.

In addition to the processor, RAM and two video cards, the laptop is equipped with a fairly capacious 2.5-inch hard drive from Western Digital with a capacity of 750 GB. This is a fairly large volume, therefore, not only text documentation, but also a full-fledged multimedia library can fit on the hard disk. The characteristic features of this drive are quiet operation and low power consumption. Moreover, thanks to the embedded ShockGuard technology, the hard drive will be protected from vibration and shock.

The spindle rotation speed in the hard disk is 5400 rpm, because of this, it can hardly be called very fast. But, nevertheless, the average read speed is 75 MB / s, and the access time when reading is 21.2 ms. We have determined the maximum and minimum bit rate using the HD Tune app. The result was 87.7 Mb / s and 42.4 Mb / s, respectively.

Using the built-in benchmark, we checked the performance index of various components of the laptop. So, the hardware components of the Acer Aspire 5755G were rated this way. The largest number of points was scored by the processor, and by a rather large margin from other components - 7 points. The discrete graphics card also boasts a good indicator - 6.6 points and the integrated graphics became the "weakest link". She was able to score 4.7 points. As a result, the overall score was 4.7 points. This indicator means that the system will be able to transmit high-definition video, as well as "pull" the simultaneous launch of several applications.

Ports and communications

On the left side of the Acer Aspire 5755G laptop is the main interface group. The first are the two line connectors. They are used to connect headphones and a microphone. Behind the audio connectors are a USB 2.0 port, an analog VGA interface and digital HDMI, as well as an RJ-45 port. In addition, at the very end of the left edge, you can see the charging socket. There is also a ventilation hole on the left side, which serves to remove warm air.

Now let's see what the right side has. There is a small number of ports, or rather there are only two of them, these are USB 3.0 and 2.0. True, they work in different standards, but with their help you can exchange data, both at standard and at a higher speed. There are no more interfaces on this side.

The main part of the right side is occupied by the built-in DVD Super Multi optical drive, and at the very end is the Kensington lock hole.

The front end of the Aspire 5755G is completely free of ports. However, there is a universal 5-in-1 card reader, next to which is a line of LED indicators. The card reader will help to read SD / MS / MS-Pro / MMC / SDHC cards.

There are no ports or connectors on the rear panel. Among wireless communications, the laptop is equipped with a Wi-Fi adapter of the b / g / n standard and a Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR module. With their help, you can easily and quickly exchange data, as well as surf the Internet.

Heat

The CPUID HWMonitor utility helped us find out how hot the internal components are. Having measured the temperature, we saw that the video card and processor get quite hot. So, for example, the minimum temperature of the central processor was 50 degrees, and the maximum reached 96 degrees. The temperature range of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card also exceeded the 90-degree threshold. It heated up to a maximum of 94 degrees Celsius. You can see more detailed information in the screenshot below.

In addition to measuring the heating of the internal components, we measured the temperature at five points on the bottom and working surface of the laptop. During testing, the air temperature in our laboratory was at around 27 ° C. We recorded the minimum temperature in idle mode on the palm area in the lower right corner, it was 29.4 ° C, and on the bottom in the lower left corner - 29 degrees.

But during the stress test, an unpleasant surprise awaited us. It can be assessed only by those who have to work in a poorly heated room during the cold season. This is where you can warm your hands. See for yourself. It is very hot in the very center of the keyboard and it causes discomfort. But what can you want if the temperature here reaches 54 degrees. And this is given that at the exit from the vent is already 71 degrees Celsius. However, the bottom also cannot be called cold. Here the maximum was also recorded in the center - 49.6 degrees. In general, the surfaces of the laptop are very hot and in this way they exceeded all our expectations. After all, you can hardly work for too long, holding the device on your lap, and there is also a lot of heat in the keyboard area.

Battery

The Aspire 5755G laptop is equipped with a 6-cell 4000 mAh Li-Ion battery. The battery is charged by a 90-watt power supply, which copes with this task quite quickly, in about an hour and a half (1 hour and 35 minutes).

We used two power plans to test the battery. With the Energy Saving plan, the battery lasted 6 hours and 5 minutes in Read’s mode and 1 hour 34 minutes in Classic mode. When the power plan was changed to “High Performance”, the indicator in the “Read’s” mode decreased by an hour and a half and amounted to 4 hours 35 minutes, but in the “Classic” mode the difference with the “economical” plan turned out to be minimal. The battery was completely discharged after 1 hour and 26 minutes.

It is logical that the battery was able to work the longest in idle mode. During testing, the display was off and the Wi-Fi module was active. As a result, the battery lasted for 10 hours and 9 minutes.

We can say that overall, the battery showed a decent runtime. Six hours should be enough for you to browse e-mail, work with office documents and perform other similar tasks. First of all, such a working time will be appreciated by users who are often on business trips.

Conclusion

To summarize, we want to say that this laptop has both advantages and disadvantages. Let's start with its pros. The Acer Aspire 5755G has an undeniably attractive design. The fine-grained surface is decorated with fine wavy lines, the gloss shimmers beautifully, the silver logo looks great against the black cover. In terms of technical specifications, the laptop deserves the highest praise. A powerful processor provides high performance, graphics are processed by discrete and integrated video cards, and you can save all the data on a sufficiently capacious 750 GB hard drive. Input devices also attract attention. With the island keyboard, you can quickly type texts, and with the multi-touch touchpad, you can zoom and scroll through pages. I was no less pleased with the set of interfaces. Its list contains everything that will not only allow you to connect various peripheral equipment, but also help transmit video and audio signals to an external display. We also want to note the great battery life. When working with text documents or surfing the web, the laptop worked for about 6 hours.

Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. These include the glossy display and high heat build-up on the surfaces and internal components of the laptop.

In general, the Acer Aspire 5755G will be able to solve most of the tasks.Consider this laptop as a versatile device that can be used for both work and play.
