The principle of operation of a household air conditioner

Refrigerant circulates inside the hermetic device, exchanging heat with air. In cooling mode, it evaporates in the evaporator and absorbs heat in the indoor unit. Condensing in the condenser of the indoor unit, it returns it. When heated, the liquid condenses in the indoor unit and evaporates in the outdoor unit.

The principle of operation of any type of air conditioner is the same and does not depend on the model or manufacturer.

The refrigerant moves heat from the room to the outside or vice versa (depending on the operating mode), and does not generate cold, as many people think. The evaporation (condensation) temperature of the liquid varies with the degree of pressure. The larger it is, the higher the phase transition temperature. By transferring heat energy, the air conditioner consumes electricity.

It is profitable to heat the room in the off-season. Consuming 1 kW of electricity, the device transfers 3 kW of heat into the house, while not drying out the air.

The main components of any air conditioner are 5 components:

  • compressorcompressing freon and supporting its movement along the refrigeration circuit;
  • capacitor (a kind of radiator) provides the transition of freon from the gaseous phase to the liquid;
  • evaporator - in it, freon passes from the liquid phase to the gaseous phase, that is, it evaporates;
  • thermostatic expansion valve (TRV) lowers the freon pressure in front of the evaporator;
  • fans increase the air flow by blowing around the evaporator and condenser. Air exchange, accelerated by fans, takes place through air heat exchangers. They are made in the form of copper tubes with transverse aluminum plates.

Air conditioner operation description:

  • under a low pressure of 3-5 atmospheres and a temperature of 10-20 ° C, gaseous freon comes from the evaporator to the compressor;
  • here it is compressed to a pressure of 15-25 atmospheres and, heating up to 70-90 ° C, enters the condenser;
  • freon, intensively blown by air in the condenser, cools down and turns from gas into liquid, releasing additional heat. High pressure liquid freon comes out of the condenser and enters the thermostatic expansion valve. Its temperature is 10-20 ° C higher than the ambient air temperature;
  • passing through a copper tube twisted into a spiral, the freon pressure drops to 3-5 atmospheres and the liquid cools down, partially evaporating and entering the evaporator;
  • here freon turns into gas, cooling the air. Then it enters the compressor under low pressure and the cycle repeats again.
