Review Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

In general, I would like to say that this wonderful device is primarily intended not to please people with ovi services, the need for which is dubious, but just to compete in the market with all other sensor devices. But what to say in addition? The market for such devices is growing very rapidly, nokia has already lost its position in the expensive segment, but the 5800 has just managed to become a hit of sales, but time is passing and it will soon become obsolete. Moreover, all this is happening under the attack of more serious operating systems: Windows, MacOs and even Android from Google. Yes, we can say that at first they set a fairly low price for 5800, and no one could compete, but not now. Now the prices for touchscreen devices are going down, and we will hope that our beloved nokia will only go up with its success and will provide us with even more interesting devices. As a result, we can say that the 5800 has practically everything from modern functions, and the phone can be considered uncontested in some way. The competitors may be a little cheaper, but they are clearly missing something. Let's move on to a detailed examination of the device itself. The phone, or rather the smartphone, is positioned in different ways: someone calls it space and absurd, because the phone was filmed in a movie about Batman, someone considers it a youth or even worse female. But I will draw conclusions and say that he will suit everyone, the main thing is that he likes it. All the same, the basis for choosing such a device is a touch screen, and so far nokia has not so many similar devices. It turns out a kind of separation between the audiences and it is impossible to clearly imagine it before your eyes, but this phone has touched someone for sure, and the popularity of the brand itself will also play a role here, because there are people who buy only nokia! The Nokia 5800 phone is positioned in the market as the phone that has been long awaited. This is Nokia's first touchscreen model. In addition, it is the most powerful in terms of functionality, and at the same time, the most inexpensive phone for its class, which is focused on music. Today this phone is simply out of competition. It is focused more on young people, although sometimes it is called feminine. The strongest point of the phone is its display. It is flat, not recessed into the body, has a protective plastic surface, you can operate it with your fingers and a stylus. The display picture is juicy and bright, easily visible to the eye. Depending on how the case is positioned, the screen unfolds automatically, taking a second or less to turn. There are only three buttons on the front surface, two are intended for calling and rejecting a call, and one is a menu key. You can enter text in three ways, using one of the selected keyboards to enter. This can be a regular numeric keypad, a mini QWERTY and a regular QWERTY keyboard that can only be used in a horizontal position. The undoubted convenience is manifested in the fact that the transitions from one keyboard to another and text input can be easily performed with one hand. Brief characteristics: camera with a resolution of 3.2 megapixels, dual LED flash, autofocus is also present; GPS navigation using Nokia Maps 2.0; the phone has about 128 MB of RAM, 81 MB of memory is available for storing data, an 8 GB microSD card is included in the package. This phone uses a BL-5J battery with a capacity of 1320 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work for about 8.8 hours of talk time and about 400 hours of standby time, which is quite acceptable! It is also calculated that the time of playing music in the player is about 35 hours, recording a video up to 210 minutes, and playing this video in the best quality about 5 hours. It is safe to say that this model is one of the best in terms of price / quality. We will analyze the characteristics in more detail a little later. Now we can say that the mass market for touchscreen devices is working at full strength. Let's take a look at what the Nokia 5800 is.

Design, dimensions, controls

The phone is presented to us as an ordinary candy bar with a touch screen, with excellent build quality and rather pleasant and expensive materials. The device is completely made of plastic, but, by the way, like any other devices, even from the highest price category, the main thing is that nothing creaks or makes noise here, I would not say how many people are that cheapness catches the eye. To evaluate the phone - hold it in your hands yourself, and draw your own conclusions, not paying attention to the reviews. Maybe you will like it right away? Outwardly and in quality, this is an absolutely average model, there are no over-achievements and no insane flaws. It is hard to say that Nokia, at the shareholders' council, specifically decided to reduce the cost of materials for such a device. Let's also consider the dimensions - 111x51.7x15.5 mm, and the weight is 109 grams.

It can be compared with other devices. I think everyone has an approximate idea of what kind of phone this is - I will say for sure not small and not large, and in no way female, well, for those who want - let it be alien.

The phone comes with a pick, and you can also see the pick, the phone itself has a connector for a strap, on which you can put this pick. Colors as usual in the XpressMusic series are red, blue and black. There is a patterned pattern on the back surface, and on the sides there is a colored strip that shimmers beautifully in the light. On the right side there is a convenient volume control key, as well as a key to lock the keyboard and screen.

The phone also comes bundled with a stylus located at the bottom of the phone, and another one in the box, in case you lose the first one. Losing it is quite simple, for example, in my copy the place for the stylus loosened after six months, and it began to fall out. On the left there are two connectors, one for a microSD card, and the other for a regular SIM card. Above is a connector for standard headphones - minijack, and a connector for standard thin charging. As with any normal touchscreen device, there is a proximity sensor that locks pressure when you are talking.

Display

This is probably the most important advantage. The screen is excellent in all respects. Quite large - the diagonal is 3.2 inches. The picture looks lively and juicy. There will be no problems with brightness for sure. You can even say that the iPhone is inferior to nokia in this parameter, because its resolution is lower and the display is larger. And the rest of the screens are pretty much the same. What can I say, the display is quite comfortable - this is the main thing, and you can not argue. And with a higher resolution, not even at the time of release, and later there will be only HTC, and this is not a praise, but just a usual plus for the 5800 and do not think that this phone is the best in the world.

All mentioned manufacturers use an accelerometer with auto-rotation of the display in their devices, which is not uncommon, but let's say that this function works quite quickly. The display is slightly inside the case, that is, it has bumpers, which cannot be called a drawback. The screen is ideal for viewing everything and does not fade in the sun, everything is comparable with competitors, let's say they are all on the level.

Keyboard, information input

By the way, this device still has buttons, there are three of them, they are present for confirming a call, for rejecting, for calling up a menu. The text is entered in various ways. There is a regular keyboard that mimics regular phones with a regular keyboard, and there is also a qwerty keyboard.

Almost everything can be done with one hand without even straining. Everything is easy with the language here, they change, they are easy to type and there are many of them here. Nobody will be deprived. The keyboard, called miniQWERTY, can be accessed both horizontally and vertically. The main plus is that with the latest firmware we will be able to type text on such a firmware even with a finger. There is also a regular QWERTY keyboard. But it is only available in normal horizontal mode. There is a possibility of handwriting text input. But I do not see the need for it, especially since it is carried out only with a stylus, and I do not like stylus. The device vibrates when pressed, gives feedback, but this is not an innovation and should not stop there. The QWERTY keyboard is a big plus, during the use of the phone there were few misses, that is, the phone fits perfectly and responds to pressing. There are tons of options - enter the text the way you like. There can be no inconvenience. It's all a matter of habit, if you want an excuse.

Battery

The set includes a lithium-ion battery with the name "BL-5J", with a capacity of 1320 mAh. According to the manufacturer, this is the most powerful battery, up to 8 hours in load mode and almost 400 in standby mode, a good indicator for a sensor device. Music plays for over 30 hours, and you can watch a movie even for 5 hours! Enough for at least two films, what else do you need? I expected less runtime.

Performance

The processor in the phone does not really stand out from other smartphones - ARM11 369 MHz. In the case of Symbian, the system has already been adjusted to the maximum for this processor and works perfectly under its control. In general, I will say the smartphone is fast enough, these words should also be enough. It is not super-fast, but quite normal for this kind of device. All this does not make the device better or worse. He's just normal, and that's enough for most.

Memory

The phone has 128 MB of RAM, after loading the phone has 70 to 74 MB of free memory. This is not bad either. In devices for 50 cu the same indicator is more expensive, but remember that the 5800 does not deal with Windows and such an amount of RAM is sufficient here. Free memory for storing files is about 80 megabytes. Surprisingly, the bundle comes with an 8GB card, I think that's more than enough. Why more?

Communications

There is a standard Usb with standard modes. Charging the phone when Usb is on does not happen like on other models. Otherwise, it is not bad, the transfer rate is quite high. And of course there is Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR support. There is also Wi-Fi 802.11g, there is a Wi-Fi network master, it is very convenient to manage it.

GPS navigation

The phone has maps and Nokia Maps 2.0 software. Most interestingly, the 5800 compares favorably with other GPS phones with a large screen. Plus, it is much more convenient to control the view of the map on the touch screen. We can say that so far this is the best navigation device from the Finnish manufacturer.

The phone's musical capabilities are quite extensive. It can be said that it is comparable to the level of such devices as the iPod, outperforming the entire line of Sony Ericsson, but slightly inferior to some devices. But this is quite enough. But for me personally, I like the sound of the iPhone more. The set includes headphones that are quite good in quality, and there is no need to buy others. The only difference is that the 3.5 mm jack does a lot. All the most popular audio formats are supported. Still, a good sound filling makes itself felt, for example, when you change the equalizer, the sound changes dramatically. Just like any other Series60 device, there is an option to enable extended stereo. In standby mode, function keys are displayed on the screen. But the appearance of the player in the background changes from firmware to firmware. The device is not deprived of various sorting of tracks, random playback, etc. There is an FM radio here, it is common, but extremely useful. For example, I often connect the 5800 to speakers. There is an automatic tuning of stations using RDS.

Camera

We can also say about the camera that it is usual here - 3.2 megapixels. As usual, there are optics from Carl Zeiss (2.8, 3.7), but this has not caused delight for a long time, but only doubts, but let's not talk about the bad. But the double flash pleases, but, unfortunately, it is not xenon, but a regular LED.

You can activate the camera using the key on the body. There is a macro mode. Unfortunately, I compared the camera with the Nokia N82, the 5800 is significantly inferior, that's where the flash plays a role. There are a lot of settings like in other Series 60 devices.

In a word - quite normal camera settings. To appreciate the camera - you can look at the photos.

Video recording is also mediocre, the settings are almost the same as in the photo, but there is one interesting thing here - image stabilization during shooting. The maximum resolution for shooting is 640x480 pixels. By the way, the recording format is mpeg4, the speed is 30 frames per second.

I have no complaints about the quality of the connection, the speaker is loud, the connection is stable. The phone rings loudly, it is audible, the vibro call is also not bad, even if you carry the phone in its own case. Implemented support for turning off the sound by simply turning the phone to the screen. We can conclude that the device was a success, and the buyer has already voted for it with a “ruble”. Everything works stably and flawlessly, especially since new firmware is constantly being released. In general, the device is quite solid in every sense. I was very pleased with the delivery set. Of course, we cannot call anything ideal, but this device strives for this. There is also good sound, Wi-Fi and GPS, which many require. Let's hope that Nokia does not disappoint and will offer more interesting devices after such a coup. Personally, I would like to reduce this device in size. If a steel device comes out with a large touch screen in a thin case and with the functionality of 5800 it will be the very thing! In the meantime, it is not possible to compare it in this price segment, but there are already models 5530 and 5230 on the market, which can be compared with Korean brands, but this is not about that now. In the end, I’ll say a little about the iPhone, it’s silly to compare them, because at the time the 5800 was released there was only an iPhone 2g, which wasn’t even close in functions, and the price of the iPhone 3gs is so high that you can buy three Nokia 5800s.

Therefore, I will say that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a good value for money.

The package includes the phone itself and, as I said, a spare stylus, a strap and a pick for working with the screen, a stereo headset "AD-54, HS-45", and an 8Gb memory card. There is also a cool case, it is not very expensive, but it is already included in the kit. The manufacturer also equipped the device with a stand, there is a Tv cable as in the N-series models, of course, a Usb cable and a charger. Finally, the software disc.
