Nokia 5250 review

The Nokia 5250 is another attempt by the Finnish manufacturer to compete with cheaper Korean touchscreen phones. Until now, these attempts could not be called successful, because the cost of mobile devices from Nokia is higher than from Samsung or LG. Nokia 5250 can be called the cheapest touchscreen model from the Finnish manufacturer. True, a small screen diagonal can alienate potential buyers. Although, for not too demanding users who want a Nokia touchscreen, the aforementioned drawback is unlikely to be decisive when choosing.

Design and ergonomics

The dimensions of Nokia 5250 are rather modest: 105x50x14 millimeters. The device also weighs a little - 106 grams. Thanks to its compact size, the phone fits comfortably in the hand, and the weight adds some solidity. No creaks or backlashes were noticed. This is where the 5250 compares favorably with its touch counterparts, most of which have certain backlash in the details. The body of the device is made of matte plastic, pleasant to the touch. The plastic is non-marking, so the owner does not have to wipe the case unnecessarily often. A stylus is attached to the body of the device, the presence of which is quite logical given the small diagonal of the screen.

The speaker hole and camera lens are located on the rear panel. At the top there is a 2 mm connector used to connect the charger. Nearby is a standard 3.5mm headphone or headset jack. In addition, a microUSB connector is located here.

On the right side are the usual control elements: a camera activation button, a screen lock switch, and a swing button that is responsible for adjusting the volume.

The Nokia 5250 mobile device is currently available in three colors: gray, red and blue.

Display

As already mentioned, the display's diagonal is not too big - 2.8 inches. Matrix resolution: 640x360 pixels. The picture on the screen looks quite bright and saturated. By the way, the screen is capable of displaying up to 16 million shades. In the sun, unfortunately, the screen behaves extremely unsatisfactorily - the picture becomes almost unreadable. It should be noted that under normal conditions the viewing angles are minimal. With a deviation of about 45 degrees, the image is overexposed. In general, this screen is quite good considering the low cost of the device.

When you change the position of the phone body, the display automatically rotates. On average, it takes less than one second to turn.

The screen is made using resistive technology. There are no complaints about the response of the screen to touch. The display accommodates up to 14 lines of text and 3 service lines.

Entering information

There are three hardware keys on the front panel: a button for calling the main menu, as well as 2 buttons for receiving and rejecting a call. The call hang-up button, in addition to its direct function, also takes us one level up in the sub-menu items.

As for entering information, it is possible in two ways. The first method is a virtual keyboard simulating a regular telephone one. This keyboard is available only when the device is in vertical orientation.

As you may have guessed, the second method is a QWERTY keyboard that works when the phone is in a horizontal position. The implementation of both regular and QWERTY keyboards is quite standard. No improvements or innovations were found.

There is handwritten text recognition. This feature is rather entertaining, although the device recognizes text quite accurately, especially when typing with a stylus.

Another useful feature of the device is a short vibration when pressed.This vibration is felt well and lets the user know when a certain key has been pressed.

Battery

The Nokia 5250 has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1000 mAh. According to official information, the phone can work without recharging up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 450 hours (almost 19 days) in standby mode.

In urban conditions, the battery life of the device was approximately 3 days. The load on the phone was average: 1.5 hours of calls, several minutes of video recording, several pictures, about an hour of listening to music.

It is also worth noting that the battery is charged for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The battery life of the phone in the following modes:

• Listening to the radio - 25.5 hours;

• Listening to music through a headset or headphones - 23 hours;

• Working on the Internet (connection EDGE) - 4 hours;

• In video playback mode (sound through an external speaker) - about 3.5 hours.

The battery life is pretty good. This is largely due to the smaller screen diagonal compared to most other Nokia touchscreen models.

Camera

The Nokia 5250 has a 2-megapixel CMOS matrix without autofocus. By today's standards, this budget camera is unremarkable. The user can choose one of three possible resolutions: 0.3 megapixel (for MMS), 0.8 megapixel or 2 megapixel. There are six shooting modes: automatic, custom settings, landscape, portrait, sports, night mode.

In addition, the user can set the shooting timer and set the grid on the screen (for example, when shooting a landscape).

There are also a variety of color effects: black and white, sepia, negative, vivid. The contrast setting is adjustable from -2 to +2. White balance: sunny, cloudy, fluorescent, incandescent, automatic.

In general, the camera settings are pretty standard. You can evaluate the quality of the resulting photos by the following examples of photos:

In addition to photography, the camera can record videos in MPEG4 format with a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels (30 frames per second). There is a software image stabilizer. White balance settings: sunny, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent, automatic. There is no time limit for recording. The recording quality is average in comparison with similar cameras. When viewing the footage on the monitor screen, large artifacts are noticeable. However, you shouldn't expect something supernatural from a 2-megapixel budget module.

Other possibilities

When you connect your phone to a computer, you can choose one of four available modes:

• Mass Storage USB - a phone with a memory card is recognized as a removable flash drive, no additional drivers are required;

• PC Suite - access to all functions of the device is carried out through the program Nokia PC Suite.

Media Transfer - transfer of multimedia files;

• Image Transfer - transfer photos.

Data transmission is carried out at a speed of 5 megabits / sec. It should be noted that when connected to a computer, the mobile device does not charge.

Of course, the phone has support for Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth version is 2.0. EDR is supported as well as the following profiles:

• Object Push;

• Dial-Up Networking;

• Hands Free;

• File Transfer;

• Phone Book Access;

• Headset;

• Stereo Audio Streaming;

• Basic Imaging;

Device Identification.

Data is transmitted via Bluetooth at a speed of about 100 kilobits / sec. We tested the stereo sound mode using a Sony Ericsson DS970 headset. All functions work seamlessly. The only thing that catches your eye is the absence of the name of the current track on the phone screen.

Let's move on to the device memory. RAM - 128 megabytes, of which 60 megabytes remains free after download. As for the flash memory, the device has 50 megabytes. The phone supports memory cards up to 32 gigabytes. By the way, the memory card slot is located under the battery, so hot swapping is out of the question.

Conclusion

Nokia 5250 makes a good impression.There are no complaints about the quality of communication. The polyphonic speaker does not claim to be the best in its price range. At medium volume, the sound is quite clear, but at maximum, wheezing appears. Vibrating alert is of medium strength, you may not always feel it in your jeans pocket.

At the time of writing this review, the price of Nokia 5250 in F.ua store was 1400 hryvnia. Such a low cost makes the device the cheapest "sensor" of the Finnish manufacturer (not counting the S40 Touch). Of course, the hero of our review does not reach the older models, tk. not so easy to use (largely due to the small screen diagonal). Besides, the package bundle of the 5250 cannot be called rich: there is no USB cable or memory card. Obviously, this step was taken by the manufacturer in order to reduce the price as much as possible. In any case, even such an attractive price cannot seriously compete with the cheaper South Korean Samsung and LG models, which provide the user with the same functions, but at a price of a couple of hundred hryvnias less. Finally, let's say that the device is worth buying for those who want just Nokia. For everyone else, there is a large selection of functional models from other manufacturers at a more attractive price.
