3D ON AN ORDINARY MONITOR - is it possible to watch 3D (3d) movies on a regular TV or monitor and how to do it

Three-dimensional effects have been known to the avid moviegoer for a long time. Back in the 80s and 90s of the last century, especially advanced cinemas were showing "stereo" films and cartoons, for viewing which cardboard glasses with multi-colored plastic "glasses" were issued. However, the real era of mass use of 3D technology began in 2009 with the release of the movie "Avatar". For two hours, viewers became participants in events taking place in a fantastic world, the bewitching beauty of which only now they could see as if in reality. And even unusual, not too comfortable glasses could not prevent a wonderful immersion in a completely new Universe.

"Avatar" broke rental records, many went to see this miracle twice or three times. After this success, most filmmakers began to translate films into 3D, television preoccupied with launching 3D channels, and the largest hi-tech companies immediately launched developments for viewing at home.

How do they shoot and watch 3D films?

3D video can be shot in two ways. Real 3D is shot simultaneously with two cameras. In such a film, the transfer of volume is as close as possible to real life, the landscapes and characters look alive, with a full effect of presence. Adapted tapes, which make up the majority on the market, have been converted from ordinary video using computer technology. It is clear that the transfer of volume is clearly inferior in quality.

How to watch?

At home, three-dimensional films can be watched on a regular TV or with the help of special equipment. You will need glasses anyway. To watch most 3D films using your simple TV and DVD player, ordinary anaglyph glasses are suitable, that is, those same good old glasses with multi-colored eyepieces - red and blue.

To watch "real" three-dimensional cinema, you will have to purchase a special Full HD kit - a TV or monitor with 3D function, a blu-ray player that reads the corresponding discs, and special glasses.

To get the expected effect from special equipment, you also need to choose special blu-ray discs with a 3D movie format.

What can you see?

Currently, the bulk of 3D films are animated and documentaries, with beautiful views of nature, close-ups of wild animals and birds. However, demand generates supply, and the share of feature films is growing rapidly, new ones are constantly being shot, and old horror films, cartoons, disaster films and fiction are translated into 3D using a computer.

Cameras for amateur use with the function of recording three-dimensional video also appeared on sale.

Unfortunately, there are no TV channels broadcasting in 3D in Ukraine yet.

Wouldn't watching movies in 3D hurt you?

The influence of 3D technology, however, like any new development, on the human body has not yet been sufficiently studied.

However, it is known that after watching a video with anaglyph glasses, some of the viewers lose their ability to distinguish colors for a certain period of time. Manufacturers and developers of 3D TVs and "active" glasses warn that prolonged viewing of films using their technology can provoke an epileptic seizure, cause nausea, dizziness, minor nervous tics (for example, eyelid twitching). After removing glasses, there are sometimes short episodes of disorientation in space, as a result of which you can become entangled in wires or trip over a threshold and fall.

3D-TV is not recommended for viewing by the elderly, children under 5 and pregnant women. Drinking alcohol or trying to use a volumetric video as a sleeping pill increases the likelihood of unpleasant effects.

Before deciding to buy expensive 3D equipment, go to the cinema for 2-3 films in 3D to find out if it is dangerous for your own health.

How much do you have to spend on buying a home 3D?

Ordinary two-tone glasses are sold in many online stores at prices from 5 hryvnia for a cardboard frame and eyepieces made of colored film to 100 hryvnia for a stylish model made of modern plastic. True, for such a price, one should not expect good color reproduction.

To view high definition 3D you need “active” glasses. These glasses are equipped with micro-closures that open and close at different frequencies, showing a different picture for each of both eyes. The TV screen also blinks at its own frequency, about 120 times per second.

The price of a Full HD TV is from 13 thousand hryvnia, the most expensive models will cost 25-30 thousand. Expensive, of course, but after you put on your glasses, everything around such a TV will become dull and expressionless, and what is happening on the screen will be as lively and voluminous as in a movie theater.

A 3D player that reads blu-ray discs will lighten your wallet by 2.5-5 thousand hryvnia. It should be noted that such players read almost all video file formats and also connect to the Internet. The price of blu-ray discs is 250-300 hryvnia.
