HOW TO CHOOSE AN ELECTRONIC BOOK - which e-book is better to buy

The small and light e-book is your personal library in your pocket. F.ua advises how to choose the right e-book.

Please note the following characteristics.

Screen type

One of the important parameters of the reader is the screen. There are:

  • E-Ink display ("electronic ink"). On such a display, the image is clearly visible even in daylight, and electricity is almost not consumed. The screen is as similar to a printed page as possible, so reading is not only convenient, but also safe for eyesight. Has a wide viewing angle (180 ° C) even in direct sunlight, does not give glare on the screen. Disadvantages:
    • most models of e-books with e-ink screen do not have backlight. In the dark you do not read, because you need lighting;
    • E-Ink has much longer page refresh times than LCDs. The response is at least 50 milliseconds, while liquid crystal displays do not exceed 15-30 ms;
    • does not play video;
    • color images are not visible;
  • TFT works on the principle that the less light, the better the image. Gas-discharge lamps illuminate the screen with frequent flickering, which is not conducive to eye health. The viewing angle is smaller than that of the E-Ink screen (160 ° C). If you look at the screen from the side, the image loses its contrast, sometimes even unreadable. Such books are cheaper than with an E-Ink display, they are comfortable to read in low light. It is also possible to view videos, color pictures and play games. But in bright sunlight on the screen of the device, the image is poorly viewed and requires frequent recharging.

Screen size

The diagonal of the e-book screen is from 4.3 to 10.7 inches:

  • the smallest 5-inch and smaller ones are easy to carry and read in transport;
  • 6-7 inches - equal in size to a page of a printed book, therefore comfortable for those who read a lot;
  • 8-inch and more are optimal for study, reading pdf-files, etc. On the large screen it is easy to view A4 sheets and it is convenient to read reduced in size and undistorted text from a magazine page to screen size.

Supported format

Modern e-books support the maximum number of formats. For lovers of fiction, the fb2 and epub formats are optimal. For technical literature - pdf and dgvu.

Memory

E-books have a built-in memory of 2-4 GB. Only 2 GB can accommodate up to 1000 books, so for those who like reading this is quite enough. If the built-in memory is insufficient, expand the electronic library space with a memory card.

Display resolution and contrast

The display resolution determines the legibility of the letters and the image on the device screen, which is determined by the number of shades of gray (from 4 to 64). The higher the resolution, the better it will be perceived by your eyesight, even in a small e-book. The optimal one is 800X600.

If you often read text with pictures, choose an e-book with the maximum number of shades of gray - from 16. The more gradations, the smoother the transition is displayed on the screen. If the images are not important to you, a value of 4 gradations is quite enough.

To comfortably read a lot of books, while getting rid of a large number of printed publications in the house, base your choice of a reader on electronic ink (e-ink). It does not require recharging for up to 30 days. And this is one of the reasons for the question of how to choose an e-book.
