Review of the music mobile phone Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone is the budget solution of the XpressMusic line.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic package contents

- Nokia 5130 XpressMusic mobile device;

- BL-5C 1020 mAh battery;

- USB cable;

- wired headphones WH-102;

- 1 gigabyte microSD memory card;

- instruction manual for the mobile device.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic design

The front and back panels are completely made of durable high-gloss plastic. Due to the fact that there is a keyboard and screen on the front panel, only a small part of the front panel is made of glossy plastic, so fingerprints on the front panel are almost invisible.

Another thing is the back panel, on which there is only a camera peephole and a small metal platform with a corporate logo, everything else is solid glossy plastic, on which fingerprints and other traces are clearly visible. At the bottom of the rear panel are the patterned external speaker holes.

Weighing 88 grams, the dimensions of the phone are 107.5x46.7x14.8. Thanks to such dimensions, the mobile phone is quite comfortable in the hand.

The build quality of this mobile device is at a high level, no creaks or backlashes were found. Now let's look at the connectors and controls on the side ends of the mobile device. The left side is rich in a set of multimedia buttons, there are three of them: two rewind buttons and one stop / play. When viewed from the front, the left side bevel is nothing special. However, as soon as we start a music player or FM radio, the LEDs light up and start blinking to the music. Our sample has a bright blue backlighting that works well with the device's colors and themes. The same solution was found in the predecessor Nokia 5220.

Thanks to the rigid travel of the multimedia buttons, the risk of accidentally pressing them, for example, in your pocket, is reduced. On the right side there are volume control buttons. As well as a slot for microSD memory cards, which is located under the plastic flap.

At the top there is a standard 3.5 mm audio output for connecting a wired stereo headset, then a 2 mm charger connector and a microUSB connector covered with a pestle cap.

There is not a single functional element on the bottom end.

The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone does not have a cover replacement. The mobile phone is available in two colors: blue and red. The solutions differ only in the colors of the side ends, the navigation key, the back panel and the backlight of the multimedia unit. The front panel remains black in two versions.

The battery cover can be easily removed. A battery is hidden under the cover, and a SIM card slot under the battery. The slot for memory cards, as mentioned above, is located outside on the right side of the mobile phone, hot swapping of memory cards is supported.

Keyboard in Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The block of numeric keys is standard. The navigation block traditionally includes two soft buttons, call pickup and rejection buttons, and a five-way navigation joystick. Soft buttons and navigation joystick are programmable for quick access to certain applications of the phone.

The block of numeric keys is made of glossy plastic, pleasant to the touch. The sizes of digital designations are quite acceptable, which cannot be said about alphabetic designations. The buttons are labeled inside the plastic itself. The keyboard is backlit with a milky white light, making the keyboard comfortable to use in any environment. When working with the keyboard, your fingers do not get tired, since the keys are conveniently spaced apart and are of medium size.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Battery

The set with the phone includes a BL-5C Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1020 mAh. According to the Finnish manufacturer, the battery is capable of working up to six hours of talk time and up to 288 hours of standby time. At minimum load, one battery charge will last for 5-6 days. These figures are pretty good compared to other similar musical solutions. With constant listening to music, one battery charge will last for 20 hours.

It takes about two hours to fully charge the battery.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic screen

The device is equipped with a two-inch QVGA matrix capable of displaying up to 256 thousand color shades and has a resolution of 240x320 pixels. The picture quality did not cause any complaints - the image is juicy and bright. The screen behaves quite well in the sun, this is due to the fact that the matrix is covered with a protective tinted glass. The viewing angles are maximized; when the display is turned in different directions, the color display is not disturbed, and there is no graininess.

The display can fit up to nine text lines and up to three service lines. The displayed font is medium sized. The font size can be changed for individual applications.

Camera Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The camera peephole is on the back. As you probably already noticed, I did not mention above that there is a camera launch button on one of the side ends - since it is not here. And this is due to the fact that the Finnish manufacturer did not focus on the camera, but added it as a regular function. You can start the camera through the main menu of the phone or using one of the programmed buttons of the mobile device.

The phone is equipped with a two megapixel camera module, which has a fourfold digital zoom. The camera eye is not protected by a protective shutter, which can quickly become covered with small scratches and spots. The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic lacks a camera for video calls.

The camera interface is vertical, but in the camera settings, you can quickly switch to the horizontal camera interface.

Zooming is carried out using the navigation joystick or using the volume control buttons, which are located on the right side of the mobile phone. Due to the weak characteristics of the camera, it is better not to use zooming in order to avoid deterioration in the quality of the resulting images.

There is no point in talking about the quality of the pictures. The camera in the phone is just a function that is not the main one in this device.

Video is recorded in 3GP format with resolutions 176x144 and 128x96, at 15 frames per second. Video mode settings are the same as in still image mode. The length of the video recording depends on the free memory on the memory card or in the phone memory. The video quality is below average, but looks fine on the phone screen.

Software component of Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The software part of the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic is based on the Series 40 5th edition platform.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Menu

The phone has five pre-installed themes.

Themes do not shine with variety, since they use the same color scheme. In accordance with the color scheme of the case in our sample, the first theme has a blue color scheme, while all the others have a red color scheme (I don't quite understand this solution). It's good that there are quite a few skins for the Series 40 platform on the web.

The standby settings are more varied. Any image, sets of slides, pictures from the camera can be set as a background image. You can also change the font color in the display settings. As a screen saver, you can use: images, slide sets, snapshots from a camera, digital clock, analog clock, and so on. In the settings, you can set the time interval after which the screen saver will be triggered.

Internet in Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The phone has a standard browser - OMA DRM version 2.0, with support for TCP / IP connections.In addition, for a more comfortable Internet connection, you can use the Opera Mini browser.

Memory and file operations in Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The phone has 30 MB of internal memory, of which only 17 are available to the user for storing files.

The problem with a small amount of memory is solved thanks to support for microSD cards up to 8 gigabytes (a 1 gigabyte memory card is included with the mobile phone). The memory card slot is located on the right side under a plastic flap. There is support for hot swapping of memory cards without turning off the mobile phone.

Gallery app replaces the standard file manager. Files located in the memory of the memory card and in the phone's memory are displayed in more than one list; to view files from the memory card, you will need to use the corresponding item in the gallery menu. Files can be sorted by date, title, format and size. For any file, various file operations can be applied, such as copy, move, rename, and so on.

Communication capabilities of the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone

This mobile phone has a Bluetooth 2.0 module that supports many of the profiles that are currently in use.

USB... The microUSB connector is located on the upper end of the mobile device and is covered with a plastic cap. When connecting a mobile phone to a personal computer, the phone will prompt you to choose one of three connection profiles, namely:

- PC Suite - this mode is intended for the phone to work with the PC Suite program;

- print and files - the mode is intended for connecting the phone to a printer via a personal computer, which is quite convenient for printing photos or other documents;

- saving data - when the phone is connected in this mode, the mobile phone is defined as a removable medium, by the way, to work in this mode, you do not need to install additional software or drivers.

When this mobile phone is connected to a PC, the battery is automatically charged.

Applications for Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

Organizer:

- Alarm clock - you can use any audio file as an alarm signal and set any interval to repeat the alarm. The disadvantage of this application is that it cannot set signals for certain days of the week;

- Calendar - a calendar typical for this model range, events can be viewed both for the current day and for a week or month;

- Calculator - the application is presented in three modes - normal, scientific and credit;

- Timer - the application supports two modes of operation - normal and interval;

Music player in Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The unit has a typical Series 40 music player that can play all popular audio file formats.

The sound quality, both through an external speaker and through headphones, is commendable - the sound is clear and balanced, the speaker volume is quite high. Our hero may well fight with musical devices from Sony Ericsson - and most likely, he will win the duel against more than half of the devices. Remembering the sound quality, we did not mean the headset that comes with the package, but meant ordinary mugs that can be easily connected to the phone due to the presence of a 3.5 mm jack. The headset that comes with the phone in the box can stay there, as the sound quality is below average.

Thanks to the player controls located on the left side of the mobile device, you can easily switch between music.

Immediately after starting the player, you will be asked to choose one option for displaying music tracks, namely: all tracks, playlists, artists, albums, genres and video clips.

The player interface includes: the album cover occupies most of the player space, the title of the song being played is displayed above it in the center of the screen, below the music player controls, as well as the timeline and volume level.

You can adjust the volume using the buttons located on the right side of the phone. In the player settings, you can choose to randomly play music tracks; or enable repeat of the current track or playlist. The player has a five-band equalizer, in which there are already five standard settings, namely: normal, pop, rock, jazz, classical and two you can create yourself. You can also turn on extended stereo bases in the player (only this does not make sense, since I did not notice any differences in the quality of playback).

The player has five themes. In addition, the player can work in the background, in this case the name of the track being played is displayed as a creeping line on the desktop of the mobile device.

With the help of the music player, you can also watch videos in mp4 and 3gp formats. At the same time, the application interface does not change, from the features I would like to note the ability to play videos in full screen mode.

FM radio in Nokia 5130 XpressMusic

The phone has a built-in FM radio. Working with the application is possible only when a wired headset is connected (this is due to the fact that the headset wire acts as an antenna for receiving a radio signal). The operating frequency range is from 87.5 to 108. The application is controlled using the navigation joystick and soft buttons. The receiver supports RDS and AF. Just like in the music player, you can choose one of five themes here. When you start the application for the first time, the phone will offer to automatically scan frequencies for radio stations, in addition, you can use the manual search for radio stations. When there is an incoming call, the sound in the radio is automatically muted, and when the call ends, it turns on. The signal quality is acceptable, too, and can be said about the sound.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Games

The mobile phone has four preinstalled Java games:

Snake III - the well-known three-dimensional snake;

Bounce Yales - in this arcade you have to travel with a rubber ball;

Rally 3D - 3D racing emulator;

Need for Speed Undercover is the same as the previous game.

The phone has a limit on the size of installed JAR files, up to 1 megabyte.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic competitors

The main competitor of our hero can be called the model of the Finnish manufacturer - 5310. Of the advantages of 5310, I would like to note the presence of a 2 GB memory card in the kit against our 1 GB; smaller dimensions 103.8x44.7x9.9 mm and weight of only 71 grams. Better quality headset supplied. The disadvantages of the 5310 include the rapid wear of the logo on the rear panel and the duration of the device's talk time. And our hero has musical LEDs that wink in time to the music.

As a rival, you can also consider the W302 model from Sony Ericsson - a stylish and austere device in the monoblock form factor, which is produced in black and silver tones, measuring 100x46x10.5 mm and weighing 78 grams, a two-inch screen with a resolution of 176x220 pixels, battery with a capacity of 950 mAh, allowing you to use your mobile phone for about three days without additional recharging. As you can see, a good music phone for a reasonable price. The main disadvantages of this device over Nokia 5130 XpressMusic are less comfortable keyboard, smaller memory card, and lower display resolution. For some users, the model from Sony Ericsson will be more attractive than the model from the Finnish manufacturer, but the choice is yours.
