Samsung SGH-D880 Duos review

As you might expect, the design of the phone has incorporated all the features typical for the products of this company. From a distance, you can tell that this is a Samsung phone, but at the same time, it has a number of interesting features. The main role in the appearance of the phone belongs to the large screen and the glass covering it. With a grayish hue, with a mirroring effect, it looks spectacular and attracts attention. You can complain that there are fingerprints on it, but they are easy to wipe off and are not striking. On a sunny day, the reflection on the glass of the screen interferes a little and the display fades somewhat from the light. Although the device has a light sensor that adjusts the brightness level of the backlight depending on the surrounding conditions and which can be turned off. This is quite convenient, as it saves the energy of the phone, the battery of which is not very powerful - 800 milliamps per hour.

Outwardly, it is in no way visible that the device accommodated two SIM-cards at once, except that the size of the phone is a little too large against the background of the general trend towards a decrease in mobile devices. On the other hand, Samsung DuoS is quite comfortable to hold in the hand, especially since the corners of the back surface are slightly smoothed out. The angular shapes and large size make the phone more masculine, so most of its users are likely to be male.

As for the control unit, we found the navigation key and the bottom row of number buttons uncomfortable - the protruding edges of the bottom panel prevent us from pressing them. In addition, you need to get used to the special bulge under the screen, with which you can open the slider. Subjectively, it was easier to do this by slightly nudging the bottom of the case. Perhaps, the rest of the Samsung DuoS is ergonomic and comfortable.

A charger and headphone jack was placed on the sides of the phone, and the camera activation and volume buttons were symmetrically located on different sides. The latter can also be used in other cases: it can be assigned two functions - Reject and Mute. One means that the call is dropped when a call comes in, the other just turns off the sound. You can also set that when the call is dropped, the subscriber will be sent an SMS predefined by the owner of the device. For example, if a user knows that he will be busy at a certain time, he can write a message with the text, say: “Sorry, I'm very busy. I'll call you back later ”- and it will be delivered to the caller immediately after the end of the call. This function was found in phones from other manufacturers, it is quite interesting and there will certainly be those who will use it often.

Right there, on the left side, you can find a barely noticeable shortcut key in the SIM card menu. The button does not protrude above the body and it has a rather tight stroke, which excludes accidental pressing of this key. Both cards are located under the battery, and next to them is the memory card port. But it would be much better if the manufacturer used a hot-swappable micro-SD card slot. Strict forms, dark color, good functionality - all these are attributes inherent in mobile assistants of business people who do not use bright phones and entertainment functions. On the other hand, usually business people use unlimited data plans, so they don't need a phone with dual SIM support. And several "sim cards" are used mainly by students, schoolchildren, young people who have a large social circle and many friends - subscribers of different operators. They are the ones who will make up the majority of the audience of this phone, so for them, it seemed to us, it looks a bit strict in something. If we talk about the positioning of the phone by the manufacturer itself, then it takes the highest step in the future line of devices with support for two SIM-cards.

Features and functionality

As in previous models, Samsung used the Living World option in this phone, with the help of which, when registering on the network, the device determines the host country and automatically sets the wallpaper on the screen with the image of the capital of this country. And in places where there is no connection, a green lawn appears on the display. This feature is unique because it is not used in phones from other manufacturers.

The implementation and menu interface in Samsung DuoS is similar to previous models from this manufacturer. It operates in quad-bands of the GSM standard and does not support 3G networks. Bodies of wireless communication are presented in the form of a Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR module. We liked the speed of its work when transferring music, photos and even Java applications (files with JAR and JAD extensions), which is not typical for every phone. During the transfer, applications are saved in a separate folder, directly from which they can be installed.

In terms of entertainment features, the Samsung Duos has a well-implemented musical component, in particular an MP3 player running in the background. In play mode, the screen displays the song title, artist name, control indicators and, if available, album art (Album and Arts function). By the way, song rewind is supported here. The built-in 3-megapixel autofocus camera is standard, but it still captures good quality pictures.

Dual SIM

As mentioned, two SIM cards work simultaneously and seamlessly. If the subscriber is talking on one line, and a call comes from the other, then the one who calls at that moment hears silence in response. Despite the fact that both cards work simultaneously, one of them has a priority - which one, the user can decide using the menu "SIM cards management". Here you can give the SIM card a custom name - whatever comes to mind, the main thing is that the word does not exceed five characters. It is convenient and does not allow confusion. A hot button for accessing their menu is located on the left surface at the top. With its help, you can choose from which SIM-card to call or send a message, as well as switch between lines. In addition, each card can be assigned a separate ringtone and message. Thus, the user will always know whether they are calling him on a personal or business matter. If he misses an incoming call and does not answer the call, information about him will be displayed with the name of the SIM card so that the subscriber knows which of the numbers he was called.

It is very important that the settings of the MMS, WAP and e-mail profiles are configured automatically after switching between SIM-cards - this significantly saves the user's time. But it is worth paying attention to the fact that it will not work, for example, from one card to talk through a headset on the phone, and from the other to work on the Internet. On the whole, working with the phone does not confuse; it is quite easy to deal with the new feature.
