TV lifespan - the useful life of a plasma and LCD (LED, LCD, OLED) TV

Do you think that the service life of the TV specified in the operating instructions is a manufacturer's verdict? You are wrong!

What's the secret to the lifespan of a TV?

Often, falling for advertising gimmicks, we forget that the lifespan of an LCD TV largely depends on the main factors:

  • manufacturer,
  • a certain model,
  • video processor quality and other components.

Each device has its own advantages and disadvantages. We ourselves can extend the useful life of the TV by adhering to 3 simple rules:

  • do not operate the TV in the maximum contrast mode,
  • activate automatic screen power saving adjustment (if any),
  • use an automatic sleep timer if you fall asleep while watching TV.

For your information: if the manufacturer does not specify the service life of the device in the instructions, by default it is 10 years according to the "Consumer Protection Law for Durable Goods".

But manufacturers deliberately underestimate the lifespan of new devices so as not to technically service them. They justify this by the inexpediency of repairs in view of the approximately the same price of the same new equipment. At the same time, their characteristics and design are improved.

The service life of the TV during continuous operation is on average:

  • plasma panel - up to 100,000 hours,
  • LCD - up to 60,000 hours,
  • LED - up to 30,000 hours,
  • OLED - up to 17,000 hours.

However, the image quality of the LCD and LED backlight deteriorates over the years, because the service life of the phosphor diodes is 30,000-40,000 hours.

Plasma also has its disadvantages over LCD:

  • energy consumption is 3-4 times higher,
  • lower resolution of the screen matrix.
